Minimum Qualifications:

RN from an accredited professional nursing school. Minimum of six (6) years’ experience in health care. Require supervisory experience, with at least two (2) years as a Lead Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Clinic Administrator working in a primary care environment.  Must possess and maintain a current nursing license to practice in the United States.  Current BCLS and BTLS certification.

Job Description:

The Nurse Administrator provides administrative leadership, consultation, and support for the USAP McMurdo Station medical department.  This position provides administrative continuity and nursing care to staff and patients participating in the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) while acting as a liaison for the Galveston Headquarters Management Team.

Job-Related Duties:

  • Serves as on-site communication liaison for clinical affairs and medical department management.
  • Facilitates on-site problem solving and consultation through a coordinated program-wide approach.
  • Objectively evaluates/documents performance of personnel and takes corrective action as appropriate.
  • Maintains a continuous physical presence within the clinic and responds to requests for assistance.
  • Facilitates patient flow, communication, and problem resolution.
  • Monitors and ensures that staff and patients have resources for effective and efficient services.
  • Assists with the implementation of policies and programs.
  • Serves as a resource person and role model for staff.
  • Leads / participates, as appropriate, in collaborative team approaches to developing and enhancing an integrated system of care.
  • Monitors and promotes fair labor practices while providing leadership and support.
  • Identifies and promptly addresses unsafe practices and other safety issues in the clinic.
  • Ensures staff participation in all fire safety, MCI drills, infection control, and other mandatory training.
  • Identifies appropriate internal controls for the department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Working Environment:

  • Worksite location will be in a remote hospital, clinical, laboratory, and/or office environment(s) at a USAP Research Station.
  • May be exposed to extreme and harsh weather conditions in Antarctic work environment.
  • International travel required.
  • Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or fumes could sometimes cause discomfort.
  • Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required such as walking, standing, and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients.
  • Frequent lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
  • Vision, hearing, talking, and sense of touch abilities must be adequate enough to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as: reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate verbal communication.
  • Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs.
  • Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to avoid injury.
  • May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, radiation, and disoriented or combative patients.
  • May be required to be on standby and work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary.

Equipment:

Standard patient care equipment, mechanical devices, and office equipment associated with remote locations within the USAP.

Other:

Contractual requirements with NSF’s USAP program may also include security clearances, including a NACI at a minimum.

Work Schedule:

6-9 month locum to work in ANTARCTICA.
