Vice Chair, Education, Director Family Medicine Residency – Department of Family Medicine

The University Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and the Department of Family Medicine is seeking candidates for a distinguished and visionary leader with a record of accomplishment in education to serve as the Vice Chair, Education and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. The Vice Chair serves as a leader in advancing the education mission of the Department, with particular focus on resident education, enhancing the pipeline of family medicine physicians for the state of Texas and beyond. This leadership role is crucial within the Department of Family Medicine, which has a long-standing history of educating future health professionals while advancing research and clinical services.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for setting and guiding the education agenda for the Department, leading various education initiatives, and mentoring faculty and resident physicians. The Vice Chair, Education and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program will have academic credentials for an appointment as an Associate Professor or Full Professor and will report to the Department Chair, Kendall Campbell, MD (https://www.utmb.edu/fammed/about-us/biographies/kendall-m-campbell). The Vice Chair will serve as part of the departmental leadership team along with the Vice Chair, Clinical Affairs and Vice Chair, Research.

 

Position Summary

The new Vice Chair, Education and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program will provide leadership for the Department of Family Medicine education mission. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting the education agenda for the department and will lead, mentor and assist Family Medicine faculty and resident physicians in developing education projects, organizing and operationalizing data and publishing findings in peer reviewed manuscripts. Specially, as Vice Chair for Education the candidate will be responsible for broad oversight of departmental pathway programming, family medicine focused undergraduate medical education and faculty development for the department. As residency program director, the successful candidate will work with UTMB, departmental leadership, residency leadership and core faculty to oversee all education related resident physician activity to include developing a residency curriculum, and planning for resident research, presentations and peer review publications. In this role the candidate will be responsible for working closely with the graduate medical education office and follow ACGME guidelines for family medicine resident education.

 

The Vice Chair, Education and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program will collaborate with leaders within, and external to, the department of family medicine to drive faculty curiosity and create an educational culture that is strategic and innovative. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to build collaborative educational relationships with a diverse group of academic, health system, and community partners. Educational experience or expertise in the areas of health related social needs, populations with limited access to care, behavioral health, diabetes, obesity, or hypertension would be ideal.

 

Key Responsibilities of the Vice Chair, Education and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program

  • Provide broad oversight of departmental pathway programming, undergraduate medical education and faculty development for the department
  • Provide overall leadership, direction, and oversight for the Family Medicine Residency Program in compliance with ACGME requirements and institutional policies.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate the residency curriculum to ensure high-quality resident education and training.
  • Recruit, select, and mentor residents in accordance with ACGME, institutional and national standards.
  • Supervise and support faculty development to ensure effective teaching, clinical supervision, and professional growth of residents.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all ACGME and ABFM accreditation standards, including preparation for site visits and maintaining program accreditation.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of residents and faculty, providing timely feedback and addressing performance issues as needed.
  • Promote a positive learning environment that fosters professionalism, and resident well-being.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership to secure appropriate training sites, resources, and support for the residency program.
  • Lead quality improvement, patient safety, and scholarly activity initiatives within the program with support from UTMB and departmental leadership.
  • Represent the residency program in institutional committees, community outreach, and regional or national academic forums.
  • Manage program budget and resource allocation in partnership with the Department Chair and GME Office.
  • Serve as a role model in clinical excellence, teaching, scholarship, and leadership.
  • Collaborate with UTMB and community partners on education focused initiatives.
  • Personally, maintain a scholarly presence in education with evidence of peer–reviewed scholarship that engages departmental faculty, resident physicians and medical students.

 

Skills and Relevant Experience

  • Some experience in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods study design is welcomed.
  • Proven ability to guide teams, based on compelling vision and fact-based analysis across multiple dimensions.
  • Understand education from the perspective of a health system and demonstrated career progression that has prepared him/her for a position of this scope, complexity, and scale.
  • Documentable accomplishment in administrative roles in a complex environment.
  • Have had responsibility for developing and administering residency budgets; Success in grant writing and funding procurement preferred.
  • Commitment to mentoring and dedication to developing research talent within the department.
  • Significant academic and administrative experience in a university health science center or comparable organization, preferably at the rank of a professor or associate professor academically.
  • Strong track record of educational productivity, including foundation or educational grants preferred.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD, DO, MD/PhD
  • Board certified in Family Medicine
  • A proven research background with evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Employment Authorization to work in the U.S.
