What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Locator position at Utility Services Group?
Key Responsibilities
- Use electronic locating equipment, GPS, maps, and utility plans to identify and mark underground sewer, water, gas, electric, and telecom lines
- Accurately mark utility locations using spray paint, flags, or stakes according to Pennsylvania One Call / 811 standards
- Read and interpret site plans, utility maps, as-built drawings, and project blueprints to determine buried line locations
- Document utility locations using tablets, GPS devices, photographs, and mapping software
- Create clear and accurate sketches or digital maps showing utility locations for crews and subcontractors
- Communicate with project managers, field crews, contractors, and inspectors regarding safe digging areas and potential conflicts
- Assist team members with safe hand-digging and vacuum excavation when visual confirmation of utilities is required
- Maintain locating tools, transmitters, receivers, GPS devices, and ensure they are working and properly calibrated
- Follow all safety guidelines, reporting procedures, and protective measures when working near gas, electric, or high-risk utilities
- Provide on-site support during active construction to help resolve conflicts, confirm depths, or re-mark lost utility locations
- Travel between job sites across the region and keep daily logs of completed tickets, locate information, and production data
