What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Principal – School Culture & Production Management position at Utah Arts Academy?
Position Overview
Utah Arts Academy (UAA) is seeking a dynamic, creative, and highly motivated Assistant Principal who understands that school culture and artistic excellence go hand in hand.
This is not a traditional administrative position. We are looking for an educational leader who can build meaningful relationships with students, foster a positive and accountable school culture, lead student discipline, and help manage professional-level productions and technical operations.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable having a difficult conversation with a student, leading a school assembly, managing a production schedule, or troubleshooting a sound system before a performance.
At Utah Arts, we believe in showing up, doing the work, and creating extraordinary experiences for students.
Primary Responsibilities
1. School Culture & Student Leadership
- Develop and maintain a positive, inclusive, and high-performing school culture.
- Build strong relationships with students, faculty, families, and community partners.
- Support student attendance, engagement, and overall school climate.
- Promote professionalism, personal responsibility, kindness, and artistic excellence.
- Be highly visible and actively involved in classrooms, hallways, performances, and student activities.
- Collaborate with faculty and student leadership to create meaningful schoolwide experiences, assemblies, and traditions.
- Help students develop leadership skills, confidence, and personal responsibility.
- Lead Student Council (StuCo) with Head of School.
2. Student Discipline & Accountability
- Take a leadership role in managing student discipline, behavioral concerns, and accountability across campus.
- Investigate student incidents, address conflicts, and implement appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with school policies and applicable laws.
- Work closely with students, parents, faculty, and administration to resolve behavioral issues and establish clear expectations.
- Address attendance, tardiness, classroom disruptions, and ongoing behavioral concerns with consistency and fairness.
- Maintain accurate documentation of disciplinary incidents, interventions, and parent communication.
- Support teachers in classroom management and behavioral interventions.
- Promote a school culture where students feel safe, respected, supported, and responsible for their actions.
At UAA, student discipline is not simply about consequences. It is about teaching responsibility, building character, and helping young people develop the skills to succeed beyond the classroom. We believe in high expectations, meaningful relationships, and holding students accountable while helping them move forward.
3. Production Management
- Manage our A/V Director for all technical production needs for concerts, musicals, theatrical productions, dance performances, and special events.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director to plan and execute performances, manage production schedules, technical rehearsals, equipment, and venue logistics.
- Oversee maintenance, organization, and safe operation of production equipment.
- Coordinate with industry professionals, vendors, and guest artists.
- Assist with long-term technical infrastructure and facility improvements.
- Experience with live sound reinforcement, digital mixing consoles, microphones, wireless systems, and signal flow.
- Ability to design, operate, and troubleshoot audio systems for live performances.
- Understanding of musical theatre audio, playback systems, and wireless microphone coordination.
- Working knowledge of Audinate Dante digital audio networking.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting Dante-enabled devices using Dante Controller.
4. School Operations & Administrative Leadership
- Support the Head of School in daily administrative operations and schoolwide decision-making.
- Assist with faculty supervision, professional development, and school improvement initiatives.
- Support student safety, campus supervision, and emergency procedures.
- Communicate effectively with families, faculty, and community stakeholders.
- Assist with school events, scheduling, and operational needs.
- Work collaboratively with school leadership to ensure consistency in expectations, communication, and accountability.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education, educational leadership, production management, or experience in a professionally related field.
- Experience working with middle school or high school students.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships, manage student behavior, and contribute to a positive school culture.
- Experience handling student discipline, conflict resolution, and parent communication.
- Practical experience in live production, professional audio systems, and Dante networking.
- Working knowledge of productions, especially technical expertise.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends for performances and events.
- Administrative licensure or eligibility preferred.
- Experience/Certifications with QLab, digital mixing consoles, lighting software, and Dante.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who loves students, understands the importance of relationships and accountability, and thrives in a creative environment.
Someone who can balance compassion with high expectations, have difficult conversations when necessary, take initiative, solve problems, and move seamlessly between student leadership, discipline, and technical production.
The ideal candidate understands that building a strong school culture requires consistency, visibility, and a willingness to engage with students every day.
Most importantly, we want someone who is willing to roll up their sleeves, work alongside students and faculty, and do whatever it takes to create exceptional educational and artistic experiences.
