JOB SUMMARY
The Ophthalmic Photographer will function in a hybrid role within the Department of Ophthalmology, with primary responsibility for supporting clinical research imaging and patient visits in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU). Core responsibilities include performing comprehensive ophthalmic testing such as obtaining detailed medical and ocular histories, medication reconciliation, visual acuity measurements (including BCVA and ETDRS), assessment of motility, pupils, and confrontation visual fields, manual refractions, tonometry, lensometry, Humphrey Visual Field testing, and administration of ophthalmic drops per protocol. The individual will capture high-quality images for research studies using multiple imaging modalities including Heidelberg OCT, Optovue OCT-A, Humphrey Visual Field, Oculus Pentacam, specular microscopy, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICG), slit-lamp photography, and additional investigational or non–FDA-approved devices required by study protocols.

Research-related responsibilities also include supporting electronic data capture (EDC), maintaining imaging and study documentation, managing image and data quality, assisting with device certification, calibration, and quality control, and ensuring study-specific imaging compliance in accordance with sponsor and institutional requirements.

Other responsibilities include providing photography and imaging support in the general ophthalmology clinic to support clinical operations, as assigned. Additional duties may be performed as needed to meet departmental and study-related needs.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

  • Education
    High School Diploma 
     
  • Experience
    2 years of experience in ophthalmic imaging with proficiency in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fundus photography, external and slit lamp photography and 
    Experience with ophthalmic imaging procedures, including IOL Master or Lenstar and corneal topography, digital fluorescein angiography (FA) and ICG angiography within a clinical setting 
     
  • Licenses and Certifications
    (CRA) CERT RETINAL ANGIOGRAPHER within 1 Year or 
    (OCT) OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHER within 1 Year 
     

Preferred

  • Experience
    College or vocational training in ophthalmic diagnostic photography and angiography 
    1 year of clinical trials/research experience 
     


JOB DUTIES

  • Coordinates patient scheduling for diagnostic photography and angiography of eye. Maintains patient records.
  • Performs ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic studies as designated by the ordering physician, uploading images to the Electronic Medical Record for review. Reviews with ordering physician quality of work performed.
  • Prepares photographic material for weekly Retina Conferences and ophthalmic photographic exhibits at meetings of ophthalmologist and/or ophthalmic photographers.
  • Instructs resident physicians in fundus photography procedures.
  • Maintains and repairs ophthalmic photography equipment at laboratory.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: (a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; (b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; (c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or (d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
