We are seeking a highly motivated unpaid research intern to join our research team working on brain cancer. The intern will be responsible for learning about brain anatomy before analyzing neuroimages of rodent brains with implanted tumors that have already been collected. The intern will evaluate, in a blinded manner, whether a novel form of cancer therapy causes a reduction of tumor growth, based on neuroimaging analysis. The intern will learn to use software including ImageJ. The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to writing portions of research abstracts and/or manuscripts and be included as a co-author on these. Candidates should have a strong academic record, experience with lab-based research, and be able to work independently once their initial training is complete.

All duties and responsibilities are carried out in compliance with institutional policies, ethical research standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Educational/Learning Objectives 1: Learn about rodent brain anatomy in order to be able to understand neuroimaging-based data analysis

Specific Details of Training and Program Activities 1: The trainee will be provided teaching materials (books and peer-reviewed publications) and hands-on training by the PI and their lab members, so that the trainee can learn about rodent brain anatomy

  • Educational/Learning Objectives 2: Learn how to identify tumor vs. non-tumor areas in rodent brains using neuroimaging

Specific Details of Training and Program Activities 2: The trainee will be provided with hands-on training by the PI and their lab members to identify the margins of the brain tumors as seen on neuroimaging, and be able to delineate the border zone, prior to segmenting the images

  • Educational/Learning Objectives 3: Learn how to analyze data and write results as research abstracts and/or manuscripts for peer-review.

Specific Details of Training and Program Activities 3: The trainee will learn to perform data analysis and scientific writing in order to generate peer-reviewed research abstracts and/or manuscripts on which they will be one of the co-authors.
