With patient safety as our highest priority, our Ambulatory Treatment Center team delivers exceptional outpatient care across eight treatment centers spanning five campus locations, supporting more than 300 treatment chairs and beds.

The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in nursing and at least three years of clinical nursing experience, including at least two years of oncology/chemotherapy infusion and two years of people supervisory or management experience. Experience working in an area with high patient volume preferred. Must have the ability to effectively communicate and deal with crisis management while working well under pressure.

Salary range: $111,000 - minimum - $139,000 midpoint - $167,000 maximum

Summary

The primary purpose of the Assistant Nurse Manager position is to assist in overall clinical operations, staff management and the coordination of patient care and customer services. The Assistant Nurse Manager affects the patient care and daily operations of assigned patient care area.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Transformational Leadership

  • Implements and monitors unit budget to respond in a cost-effective manner to changing patient, staff and multidisciplinary team requirements and strengthen unit.
  • Assists in preparation and delivery of unit staffing plans considering skill mix, staff and patient care requirements.
  • Analyzes plans for compliance with established budget.
  • Assures continuity of care as patients' transition across the continuum through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.
  • Practice with autonomy within the scope of professional nursing

  • Helps manage human resource activities for all clinical and clerical staff including recruitment, retention, supervision, evaluation and productivity.
  • Participates in identifying, recruiting, developing and retaining top talent through effective communication, performance management , career counseling, and conflict resolution.

  • Accountable for identifying barriers to patient care and solutions.
  • Active in developing strong relationships and partnerships within and across the organization to improve patient outcomes.

  • Recognizes and takes action to prevent at risk behavior i.e., non-adherence to policy, standards of care, practice.
  • Collaborates with others in quality and performance improvement efforts.

ATC Job Specific Competencies

The ATC nurse has the competence and competencies regarding all aspects of administering and monitoring a variety of systemic cancer therapies and other injectable infusions to an adult population in the Ambulatory Treatment Center.

Infusions administered may include (but are not limited to) standard of care and research chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, blood products, IVIG, growth factors, antibiotics, electrolytes and hydration. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Has the ability to assess and educate patients and family/caregivers to ensure future care needs are met. Develops collaborative, professional relationships with physicians and all members of the heath care team. Specific competencies include: IV insertion and venous access device management; Accurate administration and monitoring of infusions via a variety of routes (oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous); Performing an independent double-check for chemotherapy administration; Safe handling and disposal of chemotherapy to minimize patient and staff exposure to hazardous drugs; Continuous infusion pumps (connects and disconnects); Management of treatment related side effects and adverse reactions; Minimizing the risk for infection among patients who are actually or potentially immunocompromised; Knowledge needed to facilitate early detection of specific side effects that lead to effective self-management of the side effect when it does occur.

Other Duties As Assigned

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Preferred: Master's of Science in Nursing.

Experience

Required: Three years of clinical nursing experience. Successful completion of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center New Graduate Nurse Residency Program can be substituted for two of the three required years of clinical nursing experience.

Preferred: At least two years of oncology/chemotherapy infusion. At least two years of supervisory or management experience.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred: Certification in Oncology, American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
