Job Description
The Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of healthcare operations. This position involves the decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment. The SPT ensures that all instruments are properly cleaned, sterilized, and available for use in patient care and surgical procedures.
- Responsibilities
- Receive and sort contaminated instruments and equipment.
- Disassemble instruments for cleaning.
- Operate decontamination equipment such as ultrasonic washers and washer-disinfectors.
- Follow strict infection control guidelines to prevent cross-contamination.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and signs of wear or damage.
- Assemble instrument sets according to surgical procedure requirements.
- Package instruments in preparation for sterilization. Load and operate sterilizers (e.g., autoclaves) according to manufacturer instructions.
- Monitor sterilization cycles and ensure proper documentation.
- Handle and store sterilized items in a manner that maintains their sterility.
- Maintain accurate records of sterilized items.
- Conduct regular inventory checks and report shortages or issues.
- Assist in the ordering and stocking of sterile processing supplies.
- Perform biological and chemical tests to ensure sterilization equipment is functioning correctly. Participate in departmental audits and quality control initiatives.
- Adhere to all regulatory and accreditation standards related to sterile processing.
- Collaborate with surgical teams and other healthcare staff to meet instrument and equipment needs.
- Communicate any issues or concerns related to instrument processing to supervisors.
- Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma/GED required
Required Skills
Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred. On-the-job training will be provided.
