The Florida Center for Emergency Medical Services (FL-CEMS) at the University of South Florida is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Research and Informatics to lead and expand the Center’s research portfolio and data-driven initiatives. The Director will be responsible for developing and executing a strategic research agenda focused on improving EMS systems, patient outcomes, and public health impact through advanced analytics, data integration, and translational research. This position plays a key role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, securing external funding, managing research operations, and overseeing informatics infrastructure that supports statewide EMS data and reporting. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong background in health services research, informatics, and program leadership, with a commitment to innovation, equity, and evidence-based advancement of emergency medical care.

Research

  • Lead efforts to utilize the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) registry to assess patient outcomes and determine measures for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • Lead efforts to utilize the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to generate research questions regarding the state EMT workforce.
  • Lead Center research efforts to ensure appropriate research credentialing and best practices are followed (e.g., human subjects research training, IRB protocols, regulatory review)
  • Assist in Efforts as needed to develop a statewide FL-CEMS Learning Management System (LMS) platform that allows EMTs and paramedics to upgrade their knowledge continuously, provides educational material, provides a reporting mechanism to training completion, ability to administer course completion certificates for course offerings.
  • Guide research questions to address EMS workforce and recruitment, EMT and paramedic mental health and wellness, perceptions of infectious disease, telehealth, mobile integrated healthcare, community paramedicine, and other relevant research topics determined by FL CEMS principal investigator, center director, and key stakeholders.
  • Supervise and lead the EMS Graduate Research Assistantship program established by December 31, 2024. Supervise and lead efforts of the Graduate Research Assistant to ask questions regarding and research the general demographic of EMS agencies, EMS workforce development, EMT and paramedicine mental health and wellness, mobile integrated healthcare and paramedicine, substance use programs, time-sensitive diagnoses event efforts, public health integration with county health departments, local data collection and quality improvement, telehealth, pediatric events, disaster, and mass casualty preparedness. Ensure that each Graduate Research Assistant can submit one manuscript annually for publication.
  • Assist in FL CEMS efforts to lead and host an annual EMS innovation conference.
  • Coordinate and utilize the EMS Advisory Council Data Committee Meetings and provide consultation to support the Florida EMS Tracking and Reporting System (EM STARS).

Responsible to a Chair or other appropriate higher-level administrator of a State university.

Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities.

Responsible for academic advising and related activities.

May represent the university, college/school, or department.

Minimum

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. For Associate/Full Professor - Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals, and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization.

Experience in Clinical Informatics and EMS, board certfication is preferred, but may be replaced with experience.
