Elementary Low/incidence Autism Special Education Teacher

 

Located at the RISE Center in Columbus, KS

 

Purpose:

The job of the Autism/Low Incidence Special Education Teacher was established for the purposes of providing support and assisting in coordinating instructional programs relating to special education students and their Individual Education Plans.  He/she will monitor the programs with students with Austim/low incidence disabilities (i.e. Autism, Intellectual Disabilities) and maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, guidelines, and procedures as they related to the special education program throughout the district. 

 

Responsible to: Director, Assistant Directors, Special Education Coordinators, and building Principals.  

 

Salary:  According to Negotiated Agreement 

 

Education/Qualifications: 

  • Appropriate current state licensure or ability to obtain a waiver.
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited university in Low Incidence Disabilities OR Elementary Education Unified Bachelor's degree
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.
  • Demonstrate or develop basic computer literacy skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of interlocal prescribed computer-based reporting systems.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Frequently assists students, when necessary, with medical and/or nursing designated procedures (e.g. tube feeding, tracheotomy suctioning, toileting, brief changing, seizure protocol, etc.) as well as addressing personal care needs (e.g. hand washing, nutritional, etc.) and for the purpose of providing appropriate care for medically fragile students.
  • Frequently implements behavioral plans for students as designed by the IEP team for the purpose of assisting in meeting special education students’ needs and providing a consistent environment under the direction of certified staff.
  • Frequently assist students with challenging and/or aggressive behaviors.
  • Frequently implements education and behavioral programming for the purpose of developing new skills for students.
  • Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc) for the purpose of meeting IEP goals under the direction of certified staff.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments and/or community environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive environment conducive to learning.
  • Adapts and provides accommodations of classroom activities; assignments and/or materials for the purpose of providing an opportunity for special education students to actively participate in classroom activities.
  • Aids students in and out of classroom (e.g. packing backpacks, note taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills, etc.) for the purpose of providing assistance to students’ needs and social growth.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. CPR, education strategies, specific disability education, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring information for the appropriate care for medically fragile students.
  • Collaborates with staff for the purpose of providing necessary support and information related to the student’s progress as established in the Individual Education Plan.
  • Maintains instructional materials and data sheets for the purpose of ensuring availability of instructional materials and/or providing reliable information regarding student progress.
  • Establishing a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
  • The ability to work cooperatively and demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with paras, professionals, community agencies, and other groups.
  • Safeguarding confidential information and observing confidentiality requirements.
  • Use of appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning.
  • Faithful, daily attendance and adherence to work schedules.
  • Observe all district and interlocal policies during activities.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the educational team.
  • Support an optimal learning environment in all educational settings.
  • Ability to exhibit good time management and flexibility in scheduling.
  • Support the mission and the goals of SEK Interlocal #637.

 

 

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions frequently require the following physical demands:  walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and fine finger dexterity.  This position may also require some travel, the ability to work indoors/outdoors year around, as well as the ability to work in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments.
