Senior Product Development Engineer

Prysmian Group is seeking a Senior Product Development Engineer to support the development, qualification, and implementation of new and improved telecom cable products. This role plays a critical part in advancing our Telecom Product Roadmap and Design‑to‑Cost (DTC) initiatives, ensuring our products meet evolving market, performance, and cost requirements.

This position requires a technically strong, hands‑on engineer who can manage full product development cycles, collaborate across R&D, Operations, Quality, and Materials Technology teams, and drive projects from concept through qualification. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable on the manufacturing floor, in the lab, and at the desk-able to solve problems, run trials, analyze data, and communicate clearly across functions.

Role Responsibilities
  • Lead new product development for OSP and FR telecom cable products, including design, material selection, theoretical calculations, and cost estimation.
  • Manage full development cycles-prototype builds, qualification plans, testing interpretation, and design/qualification reviews.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with R&D teams in Claremont and Lexington, as well as Operations and Quality groups at both locations.
  • Provide application engineering support for tools, accessories, and installation‑related product needs.
  • Maintain and update ADSS tools, including costing models and special cable design requests.
  • Create and modify product documentation such as Product Design Documents and Process Setups for production readiness.
  • Support daily product performance inquiries from Marketing, Quality, and Operations, including QN resolution.
  • Analyze competitor products in partnership with the Materials Technology Group.
  • Author and present technical papers at industry forums such as IWCS.
  • Submit invention disclosures for innovative design or process solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with plant Quality Management Systems, safety procedures, and ISO14001 EMS guidelines.
  • Perform hands‑on prototype inspection to identify failure modes and support root‑cause analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in new product design and development within a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands‑on capability-comfortable running trials, implementing changes, performing testing, and completing documentation.
  • Strong technical foundation in engineering math, statistics, and mechanics.
  • Proven problem‑solving skills using analytical and statistical techniques.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across both technical and day‑to‑day activities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork across all functional groups.
  • Self‑motivated and confident, able to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering; MS degree with specialization in mechanics or optics.
  • 5 years of optical fiber cable design experience, including familiarity with flame ratings and UL testing.
  • Training in Six Sigma, including Design of Experiments.
  • Process engineering or development experience, ideally 5-7 years post‑graduation.
  • Experience transitioning from process engineering to product design or working in other cable companies.
  • Mechanical engineering background-well suited for rotating equipment, material behavior, and mechanical performance.
  • Practical cable/wire experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management capability-planning, scheduling, tracking, and delivering key milestones.
