The Level 3–5 Drywall Finisher is a highly skilled production professional responsible for the installation, finishing, and quality control of drywall assemblies within a factory-built modular construction environment. This role works within a fast-paced manufacturing line to deliver consistent, high-quality wall and ceiling systems that meet production schedules and company quality standards.
Depending on level, the Drywaller works independently on complete tasks (Level 3), identifies and resolves process limitations with minimal supervision (Level 4), and may serve as a subject matter expert who trains others and improves drywall production methods (Level 5).
This position plays a critical role in ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery of modular units while upholding safety, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.
WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED (Minimum Requirements):
- Demonstrated experience installing and finishing drywall in residential, multifamily, or modular construction environments.
- Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings, layouts, and production work orders.
- Proven ability to complete assigned drywall tasks independently with consistent quality and minimal rework (Level 3 benchmark).
- Working knowledge of taping, mudding, sanding, fastening patterns, backing requirements, and corner bead installation.
- Familiarity with production tools and equipment.
- Understanding of safety standards including dust control, ergonomics, and proper material handling.
- Ability to meet production times while maintaining quality standards.
WHAT SETS YOU APART (Preferred Requirements):
- Experience in a factory or assembly-line construction environment.
- Ability to identify workflow inefficiencies and recommend process improvements (Level 4 capability).
- Experience working with modular tolerances, repeatable assemblies, and standardized work instructions.
- Strong troubleshooting skills related to framing irregularities, backing conflicts, and finish quality issues.
- Ability to train and mentor junior drywallers or cross-trade team members (Level 5 capability).
- Knowledge of multiple finish levels and when each is required per plan/spec.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement practices.
- Consistently meets production goals without direct supervision and proactively communicates constraints.
WHAT YOU ARE GREAT AT (Day-to-Day Responsibilities):
- Installing drywall panels on walls and ceilings according to production drawings and quality standards.
- Measuring, cutting, fitting, and fastening drywall to wood and metal framing systems.
- Taping, mudding, sanding, and applying finishes to achieve specified finish levels.
- Inspecting completed work for defects and correcting issues before modules move to the next station.
- Maintaining clean and organized work areas in alignment with 5S and safety protocols.
- Coordinating with framing, MEP, and finish trades to ensure proper sequencing and minimal rework.
- Meeting daily production targets while maintaining consistent workmanship.
- Identifying material shortages, layout conflicts, or quality concerns and escalating appropriately.
Level progression in role execution:
- Level 3: Completes full drywall scope independently; requires periodic supervisor review for quality validation.
- Level 4: Self-inspects work, anticipates errors, resolves most issues without supervision, and adapts when standard processes do not apply.
- Level 5: Serves as drywall subject matter expert; trains others, improves workflows, and introduces best practices from industry standards.
