This position is located within the Engineering Service under the Maintenance and Operations

Section. The incumbent must respond to a variety of trouble calls, including fire alanns and

elevator entrapments throughout the medical center. After nonnal business hours, the incumbent

is the only Engineer on Duty (EOD) and may be called upon to perfonn duties nonnally

considered outside his field of expertise, exercising judgment and using creativity to solve

problems.

EDUCATION: This job does not have an education qualification requirement. RESPONSIBILITIES: Major duties and responsibilities will include:

Oversight and operation of chiller plant and heating and cooling systems throughout the facility.

Perform hourly checks of all operating equipment associated with centrifugal chiller units, making inspections of the cooling towers and

mechanical spaces.

Maintains a comfortable enviromnent throughout the medical center;

controlling air-handlers, hot water reheat systems, and chilled water pumps through the Johnson Controls, Metasys control system,

Checks temperature sensing points in various building areas and adjusts controls to meet local requirements and desires.

Regulates, and stops the various items of air handling equipment from central switches or from decentralized switches in fan or equipment rooms.

Starts, stops, and regulates the air conditioning compressors, the cooling tower fans,

Knowledge of standard plumbing methods and techniques.

Skills needed to remove and replace fixtures and controls, and to make repairs, such as tightening connections and wrapping exposed wiring with insulating tape.

Knowledge of the AC and refrigeration cycle of a variety of systems to make visual, audible, and mechanical checks

Performs operator-level corrective maintenance on chillers, cooling towers, pumps, steam traps, and other associated equipment

Performs such repairs as replacing valve plates, broken flared ends of copper

tubing; repacking glands, adjusting expansion valves, replacing small electric motors, and making temporary repairs to pipes

Performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function;

Must also have the skill needed to hook up equipment (for example, water heaters and disposal units) to installed systems,

must have skill in the use of tools and equipment such as tapes, rules, hacksaws, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, packing

and caulking irons, and pipe wrenches.

Work Schedule: Every other Wednesday , Thursday, Friday and Saturday , 10am -10pm

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling

moderately heavy loads daily and occasionally loads over 50 pounds. The incumbent must be in

good physical condition, have good eyesight with or without glasses and cannot be colorblind.

Work is accomplished from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, motorized high-lifts, as well as other hard to reach places. The incumbent is exposed frequently to temperature extremes, drafts, dampness, water and noise for work conditions. The majority of work takes place in an industrial environment but does require work outdoors, exposed to the elements. QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
