This position is located at the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC) within the Electric/Electronics Shop, Maintenance Section, Engineering Service, under the direct supervision of the Electric/Electronics Shop Supervisor. The general nature of the duties involve all aspects of technical support of varied control, communications, automation, life safety, fire and security alarm systems, CCTV, card key access, instrumentation and electronic systems. EDUCATION: This job does not have an education qualification requirement. RESPONSIBILITIES: Major Duties include:

Understanding the details of assigned systems, how they are engineered, and the principles of operation, analyzing what system limitations and capabilities exist.

Maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of the aforementioned systems.

Assisting Medical Center users in the application and training aspects of the systems in evaluating systems under consideration.

Insuring the reliability of installed, repaired, and modified Medical Center equipment (electronic) to manufacturers standard.

Investigating and resolving hazardous equipment situations or situations where equipment induces interference and recommending to the supervisor when a system is to be removed from service, allowed to be in service, or to be restored to service.

The incumbent will occasionally be called up to perform other related duties that may normally be assigned to other units or sections within Engineering Service.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Electronics Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Inspect Technical Practices (Electrical Electronic) Test Equipment - Electronics Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment) Use Hand and Power Tools - Electronics Without more than normal supervision

Knowledge of electronic theory, circuits, components, and material properties (excluding computers).

Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the design, analysis, test, fabrication, or verification of analog or digital electronic systems.

Theory and Instruments (Electrical Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices.

Use of Test Equipment: Electronics.

Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment).

Ability to use hand and power tools Electronics.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements- Incumbent must be able to stoop, reach, kneel, crouch in confined spaces, and maintain intense concentration for long periods of time under most adverse conditions, such as repairing, installing or adjusting electronic equipment in patient rooms. Must climb short distances in inclement weather in order to maintain and restore to service numerous antenna systems. Acceptable hearing, visual acuity/accuracy, field of vision, and color perception are required for working on micro circuitry. Moderate lifting is necessary. Heavy lifting (over 40 lbs.) will be accomplished by obtaining assistance as needed. Circuit repairs require adequate eyesight and dexterity for working on high-component-density boards.

Working Conditions: Incumbent is frequently called up to work in patient rooms, intensive care units, laboratories, rooftops, antennas, basements, etc. Work may be performed on possibly infectious and radioactively contaminated equipment or areas. Standard infection control procedures and precautions are required to safely operate within the work environment. All work is performed at SFVAMC. SALARY: QuantitativeValue EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Other
