Laboratory Supervisor – Histology
Location: Germantown, MD
Schedule: Monday–Friday (Day Shift)
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and detail-oriented Histology Laboratory Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of our histopathology laboratory. This role is ideal for a certified histotechnologist with strong technical expertise and leadership experience. The successful candidate will ensure high-quality slide preparation, maintain compliance with regulatory standards, and support a collaborative laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the histology laboratory, ensuring efficiency and compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Supervise histotechnologists, laboratory assistants, and support staff, including performance evaluations and staff development.
- Monitor laboratory workflow, troubleshoot technical and quality issues, and escalate as needed.
- Ensure high-quality tissue processing, sectioning, and staining for accurate pathological evaluation.
- Maintain and update laboratory procedure manuals, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Train staff on laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and workflow organization.
- Manage inventory, supplies, and departmental expenses in alignment with budget.
- Participate in hiring processes, including interviewing and onboarding new staff.
- Support special projects, including R&D initiatives.
- Provide bench support when needed (e.g., microtomy, staining).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience
- Proven supervisory experience in a research or clinical laboratory setting with a strong understanding of laboratory management principles.
- Extensive hands-on experience with laboratory techniques
- Familiarity with GLP standards, FDA regulations governing clinical laboratories and drug development processes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for data tracking and reporting.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Work Experience:
- AS degree in Biological/Physical sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- HT (ASCP)
- 5 years Histology experience.
- Current state licensure, if applicable
- Meet all of the qualifications listed in the Policy for Minimum Qualification for Histotechnician and Histology Supervisor.
Preferred Work Experience:
- BS degree in biological/physical sciences
- HTL (ASCP)
- Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnology program
- 5 years of histopathology experience, with 1-2 years in a leadership role
- Immunohistochemistry, IFA experience a plus
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
- Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods of time.
- Frequent walking and/or standing.
- May be required to use a wide variety of manual tools and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity
