The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is distinct among U. S. Attorney's Offices due to the breadth and scale of its work. It acts as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Locally, it handles cases ranging from misdemeanor drug possession to murders, while federally, it handles cases ranging from child pornography to gangs, financial fraud, and terrorism. The Office also represents the district in civil suits.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a student (undergraduate or graduate) studying Data Science or a related field with at least 4 or more semesters in their program, with an emphasis on statistical analysis and computation, processing large datasets, and data visualization; and an interest in providing solutions related to prosecution.

An applicant for this internship must be a United States citizen, enrolled and seeking a degree in a qualifying education institution on a half- to full-time basis (as determined by the educational institution), and seeking a degree that is relevant to this position. The applicant must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Please note that every student internship is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a security clearance. Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to work in any capacity before his or her security clearance is successfully completed.

Responsibilities:

This position is located within the Superior Court Division, the division responsible for prosecuting most local (non-federal) crimes occurring within the District of Columbia. The mission of the Superior Court Division is to promote public safety and vindicate the rights of victims by fairly, impartially, and consistently enforcing the criminal laws of the United States and the District of Columbia in accord with our ethical and constitutional duties. To accomplish this mission, the Superior Court Division is divided into five sections: Homicide, Sex Offense and Domestic Violence, Major Crimes, General Crimes, and Early Case Assessment.

The Data Analyst intern will report to the Superior Court Division's Data Scientist, working closely with each of the division's sections along with the IT Division to utilize data analysis knowledge in contributing to assigned projects that involve assisting with data collection efforts and quality control, using statistical techniques and methods, and communicating data findings to Superior Court Division and Office leadership. This information will be used to make data-driven decisions regarding the administrative and programmatic aspects of the Division's operations and management, including setting prosecution priorities and practices, ensuring fairness and equality in decision-making, assessing the impact of prosecutorial decisions and approaches, making staffing decisions, and responding to external requests for data.

As the Data Analyst intern, duties and responsibilities include
  • supporting the development of data visualization, assessment, and integration methods to prepare diverse data for statistical analysis;
  • defining the most useful measurements for the specific purpose requested and planning quality checks and controls to ensure collected data is accurate and reliable;
  • assisting in determining the best and most efficient ways to collect quantitative information, including through automation;
  • supporting the development and automation of large-scale, high-performance data processing systems and tools to improve data quality;
  • performing statistical analysis of data to assess patterns and relationships, identify trends, and reach meaningful conclusions from various internal and external data streams;
  • assisting in the implementation of information technology solutions to develop online databases, dashboards, or websites;
  • assisting in organizing and writing technical reports; and performing other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
