Job Description:
As a Financial Counselor – Patient Collections Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting our mission to provide compassionate, world-class urologic care while ensuring the financial health of the organization. This position focuses primarily on patient account collections, including contacting patients regarding outstanding balances, resolving billing concerns, and securing payment on delinquent accounts.
You will communicate with patients both over the phone and occasionally in person to review account balances, discuss payment expectations, and assist patients in resolving past-due balances in a professional and respectful manner.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented, dependable, and confident Financial Counselor to join our team with a primary focus on patient collections and accounts receivable follow-up. The ideal candidate will be comfortable having direct financial conversations with patients, proactively contacting patients regarding outstanding balances, and working to secure payment on delinquent accounts while maintaining a professional and empathetic approach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Proactively contact patients via phone regarding outstanding and past-due balances
- Work delinquent patient accounts and actively collect payments
- Communicate clearly with patients regarding account balances, payment expectations, and collection timelines
- Set up and manage patient payment plans when appropriate
- Review accounts to identify collection opportunities and follow up accordingly
- Document all patient communications, payment arrangements, and collection efforts in the billing system
- Answer patient billing questions and resolve account discrepancies when possible
- Collaborate with the billing team to resolve claim issues that may impact patient balances
- Ensure accounts are appropriately escalated or transferred to outside collections when necessary
- Maintain professionalism and empathy while conducting difficult financial conversations
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree in business, finance, or healthcare preferred
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in medical billing, patient collections, revenue cycle, or accounts receivable preferred
- Strong comfort level making outbound collection calls
- Knowledge of insurance benefits and patient billing processes preferred
- Excellent verbal communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to confidently discuss financial obligations with patients
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficient in EMR and billing systems; experience with AllScripts and Phreesia is a plus
