Job Title: EHS Specialist

Department: Environmental, Health & Safety

Responsible to: Corporate Urbaser Inc.

Hours: M-F Full time

Salary: $90,000 - $120,000 annually DOE

 

SUMMARY

The EHS Specialist works on site at our San Leandro, California site and provides environmental, health and safety guidance and support for existing environmental, health and safety programs. This role is responsible for ensuring the facility’s full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations and permit conditions. The EHS Specialist provides technical information to decision makers, maintains recordkeeping for all environmental, health and safety programs and required employee training and certifications such that business and facility practices meet all applicable environmental and safety regulations and compliance obligations. This position will also be responsible for efforts to ensure this and other sites compliance with all applicable environmental regulatory requirements. Field work includes site audits, EHS inspections, and working with regulators and vendors visiting the site.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- The EHS Specialist will follow up and support Urbaser’s effort to maintain Environmental, Health and Safety compliance for our facilities and their employees.

- Develop, manage, and implement Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)-related programs and projects, with support from consultants where appropriate.

- Maintain existing health and safety programs (e.g., IIPP, EAP, Hazcom, RPP, COVID-19, BBP, LOTO, Confined Space Programs).

- Create additional health and safety programs as needed.

- Point of contact for inspectors, regulators, and visiting agencies.

- Oversee and ensure compliance with all environmental permits and regulatory requirements directly related to facility operations, including solid waste facility permits, air permits, wastewater discharge requirements, bio/medical waste and hazardous waste management and other administrative requirements as needed.

- Maintain current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) onsite and develop additional SOPs in conjunction with Production and Maintenance heads, as needed.

- Perform employee health and safety training and support section heads that also conduct employee training.

- Participate with the site operations team as needed and conduct incident investigations, identify root cause(s), and provide recommendations for corrective actions based on findings and conclusions to Plant Management.

- Stop unsafe practices when observed.

- Maintain tracking and monitoring of EHS performance metrics and manage all EHS reporting.

- Implement new policies or procedures to improve compliance. Conduct internal audits.

- Complete and maintain Hazard/PPE Assessments.

- Reporting to the local agencies as per facilities permit.

- Support Human Resources with return to work and modified duty program.

 

VALUABLE QUALIFICATIONS

- Valid Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential.

- Experience of applied Health and Safety in high hazard environments.

- Field experience in diverse operations and work environments.

- Bachelor’s degree required.

- Excellent communication skills (e.g., consensus building, group meetings, one-on-one meetings, instruction, meetings with visitors and conducting tours when required).

- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

- Experience with Cal OSHA regulations (Title 8).

- Knowledge and understanding of relevant standards, legislation, codes of practice, guidance and operating procedures that apply in a high hazard environment.

- Ability to stand for long durations, climb ladders, walk for extended periods of time.

- Able to wear a half-faced elastomeric respirator and face covering as needed.

 

Salary : $90,000 - $120,000
