Urbanity Dance is currently seeking a full-time Managing Director to energize and lead the organization in its next phase of growth. Working alongside Founder & Director Betsi Graves, the Managing Director oversees the administrative arm of the organization including development, financial management, and HR, with the majority of the role being development. Reporting to the Board of Directors and as co-leader of Urbanity, the Managing Director will work to set and achieve the strategic vision of the organization while ensuring long-term sustainability and increased organizational capacity.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader who is passionate about the arts with a track record of fundraising success. This position is a great fit for someone who is a positive, solution-oriented strategist. The candidate should be entrepreneurial and self-aware, understanding what personally keeps them charged and energized and when they need rest. This individual has an unequivocal commitment to social justice and makes all decisions through a lens of equity, inclusion, and access. The ideal candidate is invigorated by possibilities, is able to dream big, and is action-oriented to accomplish goals thoughtfully, with attention to detail and efficient use of time and available resources. The ideal candidate is someone who is a system implementor, excellent listener, and believes that fostering community is a crucial element of organizational success.

Responsibilities:

Development:

  • Create and implement annual development plan and calendar, including funding from individual institutional funders, as well as special events
  • Design and execute all fundraising campaigns
  • Create and execute the annual gala, as well as smaller fundraising events throughout the year
  • With the Grant Writer, research grant opportunities and review and submit grant proposals. Fulfill all grant award reporting requirements
  • With the Founder & Director and Development Committee, identify, research, and cultivate major donor prospects
  • With Development Assistant, maintain stewardship practices to retain and increase donor activity, including issuing timely acknowledgements
  • Establish and maintain relationships with institutional funders
  • With Development Assistant, oversee maintenance of Salesforce database
  • With Marketing Director, collaborate on marketing materials for development campaigns 
  • Run weekly Development Staff Meetings

Finance:

  • In conjunction with the Finance Committee, craft and oversee the annual budget
  • With the external bookkeeper, maintain financial management practices and systems to allow for informed decision-making, ensuring the financial wellbeing of the organization
  • With the Finance & Operations Assistant, oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash flow projections
  • With the external bookkeeper, oversee and approve payroll
  • With the auditors and external bookkeeper, lead annual audit preparation and completion
  • Ensure the attainment and renewal of appropriate insurance coverage
  • With the Treasurer, manage lending and debt needs
  • Obtain and manage necessary filings and permits

Human Resources:

  • Manage the Employee Handbook, reviewing existing HR policies and making adjustments and additions, as needed
  • Manage Employee Benefits, including working with external vendors and service providers
  • Maintain a positive, collaborative work environment, addressing staff and constituent concerns, as they arise
  • Ensure appropriate onboarding and training policies and procedures for all administrative staff
  • Ensure the implementation of an annual performance evaluation for all staff that ties to the goals for the organization
  • Ensure the recruitment and selection of staff with appropriate skills, expertise and personal values to help further Urbanity’s vision and mission
  • Hold annual staff retreat

Board Management:

  • With Founder & Director, act as chief advisors to the Board of Trustees and its committees, particularly Finance, Development, Executive, and Governance Committees, serving in a way that helps facilitate the successful completion of Board goals
  • Provide Urbanity’s Board of Directors with regular reports on organizational progress
  • Schedule Board Meetings and prepare and distribute Board Meeting Materials
  • Manage Development, Executive, Governance, and Finance Committees, including scheduling and running committee meetings
  • Assist with Board Member recruitment and onboarding

Leadership:

  • Work closely with the Founder & Director and Board of Directors to lead the organization towards its mission, vision, and strategic goals
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director on marketing and publicity 
  • Reflect the organization’s values in daily management, strategic planning, and communication
  • Establish a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with Urbanity’s core values and all appropriate legislations and regulations
  • Ensure all programmatic and management decisions are carried out with a DEI lens
  • Serve as an external representative of Urbanity Dance, alongside the Founder & Director
  • Be an active participant in the local and national dance community

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • At least five years of experience, preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience and success
  • Proficiency with MS Office/Google Apps
  • Excellent people skills
  • Passionate about Urbanity’s mission
  • Proactive, solutions-based problem solver
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Aptitude for prioritizing tasks to meet programmatic and organizational goals
  • Ability to engage in dialogue with internal team members to ensure work is balanced and adequate support is available to complete tasks
  • Commitment to Urbanity’s vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and community
  • Appreciation for/interest in dance and the arts

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Experience  with Quickbooks
  • Multi-lingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin/Cantonese)

Schedule:

This is a full-time, hybrid position with a flexible working schedule within a “regular” 40-hour work week. The candidate must be able to readily commute into Boston, as needed, for in-person staff and donor meetings.

Salary:

$70,000 - $80,000, commensurate with experience
