JOB SUMMARY:
The Middle School Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator works collaboratively with community groups and school personnel to implement and expand school based mentoring program. They serve as the liaison between community groups and business partners. The Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator provides ongoing support and to maintain accurate records and files on all mentors, tutors, Observers, business partners, and other volunteers at UMS.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

C-U One to One Mentor Program and other mentor programs


Recruitment

  • Maintain and provide needed updates to database on current C-U One to One Mentors.
  • Work with other mentor program staff to promote C-U One to One Mentor Program in the communityand school.
  • Work with other mentor program staff to recruit new mentors.

Site Development

  • Educate middle school staff, about the parameters and goals of CU 1:1 mentoring
  • Identify, assemble, and coordinate a mentoring with other support services at UMS.
  • Assist teachers in appropriate communication with mentors

Screening and Orientation

  • Keep a copy of mentor application on file.
  • Check references and conduct interviews for mentor applicants.
  • Provide on-site orientation for new mentors.
  • Student Selection and Matching.
  • Compile and maintain list of deserving students to be matched with a mentor.
  • Secure parental permission for students to participate in program and
    observe, interview and explain program parameters to students.
  • With Mentor Support Team, match students with appropriate mentor.

On-going Support and Supervision

  • Contact mentor within two weeks of match and then monthly to assess if intervention is needed.
  • Maintain accurate contact information on file for each mentor.
  • Provide additional support and information for mentors.
  • Provide match intervention if necessary.
  • Work with District Mentor Coordinator to facilitate transfer of student/mentor pair to new schoolsite if applicable.
  • Compile sign-in sheet hours and report totals to District Mentor Coordinator each semester.
  • Transition Mentor-Mentee pairs (6th to 7th grade, 7th to 8th grade & 8th to 9th grade) to and from new schools.

Participant Appreciation

  • Coordinate site specific appreciation events for Mentors & Volunteers.
  • Assist in year-end celebration activity/banquet.

Evaluation

  • Assist in evaluation of mentor programs by assuring that forms are filled out in a timely fashionas requested.

Community Partnership Development

  • Identify potential Community/business partners for UMS as a whole or for individual classes or
  • Work with other Mentor Program staff in recruiting businesspartnerships for UMS.
  • Act as the school liaison for school-business partnerships and external organizations established for UMS.
Other Volunteer/Community Involvement (to be negotiated at each building)
  • Act as the school liaison to all University of Illinois/Parkland Volunteer Programs.
  • Provide screening and orientations for all volunteers, tutors, Observers and external organizations at UMS.
  • Maintain accurate contact information on file for each volunteer, tutor and observer.
  • Compile sign-in sheet hours and report totals to District Coordinator each Semester.
  • Act as the liaison between volunteers, tutors and observers with staff at UMS.
  • Facilitate periodic recognition events for all volunteers, tutors, and observers.


Other Duties

  • Attend monthly cross-district meetings of Community Involvement/Mentor Coordinators
  • Attend Mentor Training Part I, Part II, and other training classes as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate’s Degree or minimum 30 hours college credit
  • Knowledge and ability to work with the community, local organizations and businesses.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with diverse populations.
  • Solid computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Docs


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:


  • Paid for four (4) hours per day
  • Position is five days per week during the school year staff calendar

  • This is not a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
  • This is a non-exempt position.
  • Pay rate is $20.14/hour
