TITLE: GEAR UP for GREATNESS! ( High School Summer Transition) Teacher (Multiple Positions Available)
LOCATIONS: Urbana High School
SUPERVISOR: This position reports directly to Program Coordinator, Building Administrators, and Program Director
JOB SUMMARY: The GEAR UP for GREATNESS! (High School Summer Transition) Teacher is responsible for establishing a developmentally appropriate summer learning environment and curriculum for eighth grade students entering ninth grade.
PROGRAM DATES: August 3 - 7, 9:00 - 3:00
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Prepare lesson plans and implement them to provide a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that assists students assigned to the classroom with achieving specific educational goals.
- Create a classroom environment that is welcoming to all students and supports the school mission statement.
- Supervise and collaborate with support staff assigned to the classroom to develop general classroom procedures, goals, schedules, behavior expectation and classroom activities for students.
- Plan and implement activities inside and outside of the classroom that expose a young adult to a variety of experiences to broaden a young adult’s perspective, such as field trips, cooking activities and experiments.
- Implement appropriate assessments and document student progress as required by the district and ISBE grant.
- Review, develop, and requisition materials for the classroom.
- Work in partnership with the GEAR UP for GREATNESS! (High School Summer Transition) Coordinator to plan and encourage family involvement in the education of their young adults..
- Establish and maintain procedures for communicating with families on a regular and frequent basis.
- Supervise and provide ongoing training for support staff assigned to the classroom.
- Complete progress reports and maintain student records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
- Meet all requirements for classroom teachers as outlined by the ISBE grant.
- Perform any and all additional duties as assigned by the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools and/or the Leadership Team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Bachelors’ Degree from an accredited college or university, with certifications and endorsements as applicable
EXPERIENCE
- 2-3 years classroom experience preferred
- Internal applicants only
LICENSES/CREDENTIAL:
- Valid Illinois Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to assess students and knowledge of student development.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively on a collaborative team.
- Ability to effectively work with students with a history of behavioral, social/emotional and/or developmental disabilities.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Monday-Thursday (9:00 - 3:00) with options to work full or partial days. Position runs August 3, 2026 - August 9, 2026, only when the program is in session. Teacher pay is $32/hr.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
START DATE: Orientation prior to the start of the program

- This position is not part of the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
- Position contingent upon grant funding.
