About UrbanShift

Urban Shift Relocation Services (UrbanShift) manages one of the hardest parts of redevelopment. We focus on relocating residents during construction with transparency and respect, so households are supported through every step of the process.

We work on projects in New York City and the surrounding region, partnering with developers, housing agencies, and nonprofits. Our projects are hands-on and detail driven. The work includes meeting with residents, explaining required notices and other documentation, coordinating moves, and managing vendors, schedules, and budgets.

We’re looking for steady, resident-centered team members who can support households through stressful transitions while keeping projects on track. If you’re organized, people-focused, and steady under pressure, this is a place where your work will have a direct impact on households and communities.

Role Overview

The Relocation Specialist (RS) supports residents through every step of the relocation process. The RS carries out daily tasks such as resident communication, scheduling, inspections, notice distribution, and move logistics. Specialists ensure residents are supported with care and that all relocation activities are documented accurately and completed in compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for residents, addressing questions, concerns, and grievances while providing clear, respectful communication throughout the relocation process.
  • Manage relocation activities at assigned project sites from start to finish, coordinating with property managers, contractors, developers, and internal staff to align resident moves with construction schedules.
  • Conduct household interviews and needs assessments to determine relocation requirements, special accommodations, and appropriate housing options.
  • Identify and show available temporary or permanent apartments and assist residents with housing selection and required paperwork.
  • Deliver and explain relocation notices in plain language, track acknowledgments, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Schedule and oversee inspections, move dates, and return-to-unit timelines to ensure smooth transitions for households.
  • Coordinate and oversee relocation services including packers, movers, storage vendors, and discarding services such as on-site dumpsters.
  • Provide hands-on assistance with packing, unpacking, and organizing support for residents requiring additional help, including seniors, residents with mobility needs, large families, and accumulator households.
  • Maintain complete resident case files, including interview notes, notices, communications, claims, and assistance requests, ensuring compliance with relocation plans and applicable regulations.
  • Track relocation budgets, vendor approvals, and resident claims, ensuring accurate documentation and timely processing.
  • Provide on-site support on move days and troubleshoot issues to ensure successful relocations.
  • Proactively communicate updates and escalate risks or issues in a timely manner.
  • Prepare daily or regular progress updates summarizing completed relocations, upcoming moves, and any issues requiring management attention.
  • Assist with translation or coordinate interpreter services to ensure language access for residents with limited English proficiency.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in housing, relocation, logistics, property management, leasing, compliance and/or related community/social services.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working directly with residents or clients in a supportive role.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft office and cloud-based tools for documents, spreadsheets, and project management.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends to support resident relocations and project schedules.
  • Comfort working directly with residents in a field-based, on-site role.
  • Bilingual skills preferred (English/Spanish).
