OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
POSITION » SPECIAL EDUCATION AIDE
Urban Discovery Schools (UDS) is an internationally awarded T/K-12 public school system in San
Diego, CA. Celebrated for our innovative learning environments, UDS works in close partnership with
UC San Diego Extensions and the UC San Diego Design Lab.The Special Education Aide serves in a
central role to provide supports for students and family support services to students with an
individualized education plan. The position requires this individual to be a positive contributor, highly
communicative, service driven, kind, empathetic, technologically proficient,patient, collaborative,
flexible, mission driven, and solutions oriented.
CLASSIFICATION » This is an at-will classified position applicable to Fair Labor Standards Act.
LINE OF CONTINUITY/SUPERVISOR » Special Education Aides report to the Special Education
Aide Coordinator for daily assignments at the direction of the Lead Education Specialist.This position
is evaluated by the lead administrator or their designee.
ENTRUSTED LEARNING COMMUNITY MEMBERS » Parents/guardians and students.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS »
Essential elements of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Follow schedule assigned by supervisor;
- Assist with instruction and tutoring to reinforce or follow-up on the teacher’s lessons;
- Encourage the student(s) and help maintain a supportive learning environment.
- Assist student(s) with assigned special projects;
- Assist Ed Specialist(s) with implementation of Individual Educational Plans (I.E.P.s) and in
administering a variety of tests and evaluative exercises;
- Assist with academic needs of students;
- Observe and report unusual or atypical student behavior to school authority;
- Assist in maintaining student control and in implementing behavioral modification systems;
- Assist teacher(s) and/or student(s) during morning, lunch, or other activities;
- Attend parent conferences and parent information nights, and/or make parent contacts;
- Respect the confidential nature of pupil records and school reports.
Other Responsibilities
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings and collaborations;
- Supervise and provide assistance to students as directed by supervisor or designee;
- Direct student groups to and from transition areas (e.g. lunch) in a safe and organized manner;
- Maintain a harmonious learning community by encouraging peaceful resolution of conflicts;
- Clean and sanitize tables between classes or at the end of lunch, per health department;
- Assist with street crossing and pick-up/drop-off duties in the mornings and afternoons;
- Accompany student(s) on field trips as needed;
- Assist with teachers and/or office staff with clerical tasks as needed;
- Other duties as assigned or needed.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of techniques and methods of effective instruction for students with special needs;
- Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
- Knowledge of arithmetic calculations;
- Ability to project a professional constructive, stable, and positive attitude;
- Ability to learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without close and
immediate supervision;
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of child growth and
development, including students with medical needs;
- Ability to execute oral and written directions and follow through;
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relations with others;
- Ability to keep accurate records, logs, and time sheets;
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION
- Stand or sit: Must be able to remain in a stationary position for over 50% of the time;
- Walk: This position requires the employee to move and transverse the office, access file
cabinets, office machinery, etc.;
- Use of hands/fingers to handle or feel: Constantly operates a computer and other office
productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer;
- Climb or balance: Continuously navigates stairs and occasional ascend or descend ladders;
- Stop, kneel, crouch, or crawl: Position self to work on computers and equipment including
under desks or tables as needed.
- Talk/hear: The person in this position frequently communicates with student,
parents/guardians, community members, and others;
- See: Must be able to observe computer screen and all members of the school community
while on site or on home visits;
- Carry weight, lift: Must be able to carry/lift 25 lbs at a height of 3-4 feet and a distance of up
to 10 feet at a time for setting up school related activities;
- Exposed to work: Works on school sites and makes community/home visits as required;
- Drive/transportation: Must hold a valid driver’s license at the time of employment and can
transport themselves to various workplaces.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TECHNICAL SKILLS
- High school diploma with enrollment or completion of post-secondary school preferred;
- Current First aid Certificate, CPR Certificate, and Background Checks;
- Must be able to operate a computer and all computer programs associated with the position at
the time of employment;
- Must be able to work standard office equipment associated with this position.
Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Pay: $18.50 - $25.00 per hour
