What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Program Leader position at Upstate Correctional Facility?
Recreation Program Leader / Part Time (2) - Non-Competitive / SG 14
Salary: $26,882.00- $34,315
Must be permanent in title and interested in a transfer/reassignment - OR - Must be reachable on CS list - OR -
Either 1. an associate's degree in physical education, recreation, recreational therapy, or a closely related recreational field* AND two years of experience directing or assisting in the direction of a scheduled, organized recreational program;
Or 2. an associates degree AND three years of experience as described in #1;
Or 3. a bachelor's degree or higher in physical education, recreation, recreational therapy, or a closely related recreational field;*
Or 4. a bachelor's degree or higher AND one year of experience as described in #1;
Or 5. four years of experience as described in #1.
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

- Qualifying closely related recreational field degrees are: athletic training, exercise science, kinesiology (athletic training), kinesiology (physical education), kinesiology (sports management), movement and science, health and wellness (fitness/exercise), recreation and leisure studies, recreation education, recreation management, sports management, sports medicine or therapeutic recreation.
