Position Title: Middle School English Language Arts Curriculum Leader
Reports To: Deputy Superintendent and designated administration
Date of Assignment: 2025-2026 School Year
SUMMARY:
Curriculum leaders serve a vital role in the instructional program. Primarily their role is to develop a program within the content area for which they have been hired. Some administrative responsibility may be involved. In all of the duties and responsibilities listed, the curriculum leader is under the guidance of the principal, and/or appropriate Director and the direction of the Deputy Superintendent. Any recommendations, suggestions, or proposed action will be submitted to the K-12 curriculum and instructional panel.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties as assigned):
- A curriculum leader will assume the responsibility for the development, the revisions and the constant evaluation of curriculum, and assessment. Each curriculum leader must carry out their responsibilities with adherence to all applicable Board policies.
- Curriculum leaders are responsible for keeping abreast of current information including pertinent research concerning the subject areas for which they have oversight. They should be aware of all materials and practices in use including the current textbooks, workbooks, software, literature, teaching techniques, assessment practices, aids-in-teaching, equipment, supplies and tools. Through collaboration with their committee, department, or a specific grade level, they should make recommendations for changes, improvements, and enhancements in their curricular area.
- Curriculum leaders prepare and oversee the yearly budgets for their content area.
- Curriculum leaders are responsible for the equipment and supplies in their areas. The ordering and requisitioning of equipment and supplies, the keeping of an inventory of all equipment, supplies, textbooks, technological hardware, teaching aids, etc., the distribution of equipment and teaching aids among their committee/department, and the security of the equipment shall be their responsibility. They shall also evaluate the supplies and equipment as to their appropriateness.
- Curriculum Leaders will provide guidance and direction to new teachers. They will assist teachers in the implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
- Curriculum leaders, along with other administrators, are jointly responsible for professional development training as it relates to curriculum analysis and development, instruction strategies, assessment practices, and materials selection.
- A curriculum leader shares the responsibility with the curriculum panel for proposing changes in the curriculum, for suggesting additions to subject offerings and keeping abreast of the total school curriculum.
- A curriculum leader may assist any teacher who may request help. This may be done through help in planning lessons, observing the teacher in the classroom, etc.
- A curriculum leader may participate in the recruiting process and may screen resumes, attend recruiting events, interview applicants, and observe demonstration lessons when deemed appropriate by administrators.
- A curriculum leader may assist the principal in the assignment of teachers when requested to do so by the administration.
- Time permitting, curriculum leaders shall be available for classroom observation and for providing suggestions for the improvement of instruction upon the request of teachers.
- The curriculum leader's summer responsibilities are:
(a) Planning and supervision of summer workshops and professional development offerings including tracking and submitting hours for pay, flex-time, and/or Act 48 credit.
(b) Evaluation, organization, and distribution of curriculum materials
(c) Evaluation of instructional program
(d) Analysis of possible future changes in the instructional program
(e) Evaluation of assessment practices, recommendations for assessment changes, and provide leadership in
data analysis
(f) Planning and organizing the plans for the next school year.
(g) Completing any tasks as assigned by the principal, appropriate Director, and/or Deputy Superintendent.
- Conducts curriculum meetings in accordance with the contract and plans evening and summer professional development courses. Attends leadership meetings as planned by the Directors, Assistant Superintendents, and Superintendent.
- Works extended hours and additional 20 days beyond the teacher's work year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree with appropriate teaching certification in the identified content area
- Masters degree in education, (preferred).
- A minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience in Upper St. Clair School District AND current or prior experience in the respective content area.
