POSITION OVERVIEW

Charlotte Country Day School seeks an experienced academic coach to support 9th-grade students in their transition to upper school. This role is not a content tutoring position. It is not about reteaching content but helping students develop the executive functioning skills, study habits, and self-regulation strategies needed for success.

An effective coach will empower students to take ownership of their learning by focusing on organization, time management, study skills, and problem-solving approaches within their coursework. Coaches must balance guidance with fostering independence, ensuring students develop the skills to succeed on their own.

Successful candidates have experience in education, special education, instructional coaching, counseling, or academic strategy support, with a focus on executive functioning, study skills, and fostering independent learning rather than reteaching content. They should have a strong understanding of organization, time management, self-regulation, and metacognitive coaching, particularly in supporting students transitioning to upper school. This role is ideal for educators who enjoy mentoring students, building their autonomy, and guiding them toward academic independence.

POSITION DETAILS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Part-time, hourly position during the school year (up to 30 hours per week), with a flexible schedule that varies based on the school's cycle days.
  • Provide academic coaching to 9th/10th-grade students, helping them build organization, time management, study strategies, and subject-specific confidence.
  • Support students in developing conceptual understanding in their coursework by guiding them through challenging material using a coaching-based approach rather than direct instruction.
  • Help students break down complex assignments, structure their thinking, and apply problem-solving strategies in various subjects.
  • Reinforce critical thinking, reading comprehension, and analytical skills within the context of their schoolwork.
  • Foster independent learning by teaching students how to self-monitor, set goals, and adjust their study habits.
  • Use a non-directive coaching approach that encourages metacognition, self-reflection, and problem-solving rather than simply reteaching content.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support student growth.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • A four-year degree in education, counseling, special education, or a related field.
  • Classroom teaching experience OR experience as a learning specialist, special educator, or instructional coach.
  • Demonstrated ability to help students build executive functioning and independent learning skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience working one-on-one with students in a structured academic support setting (e.g., academic coaching, special education, differentiated instruction, or intensive tutoring with an executive functioning focus).
  • Background in supporting students with ADHD, learning disabilities, or executive functioning challenges.
  • Experience working with 9th-grade students and supporting their transition to high school.
  • Content knowledge in High School Math/Science/Writing/History

Application Process

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, current resume, and list of references with telephone numbers via the Employment Portal at https://www.charlottecountryday.org/employment.
