Position Title: Paraprofessional & Educational ASL Interpreter

Rate of Pay: $26.48 to $29.79 / hour (Depending on experience and assignment)

Employment Status: Regular / Full-Time

Reports To: Assigned Coordinator of Special Education and Teacher

Job Objective: Performs a variety of classroom support and student personal care services as directed under the supervision of an assigned teacher, while supporting student access to receptive and expressive language throughout the school day via American Sign Language (ASL) and educational interpreting services.

Minimum Qualifications: To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to provide credentials or permit appropriate for the assignment.
• Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), Signed Exact English (SEE), or other communication modalities as required by student needs.
• Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
• Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test).

Skills & Abilities:

• Self-directed and able to learn the required skills for the position.
• Proficiency in providing accurate, real-time receptive, expressive, and transliterating interpreting services tailored to the educational environment.
• Strong voicing skills to accurately interpret sign language into spoken English, reflecting the student's tone, nuance, and intent.
• Knowledge of educational interpreting principles, professional ethics, and communication strategies for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
• Ability to balance the ethical standards of an interpreter with paraprofessional instructional support duties.
• Ability to physically manage students with disabilities.
• Congenial disposition and strong diplomacy skills.
• Ability to cope with stressful traffic, weather conditions, and passenger distractions.
• Successful completion and periodic renewal of state-mandated and service center training (e.g., communicable disease, child abuse, CPR, first aid, and/or behavioral management).
• This assignment may require a valid driver's license, access to a reliable vehicle, and/or completion of van driver training. Employees must meet qualifications to be covered by the service center's insurance carrier.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

• Provides continuous receptive and expressive interpreting services (utilizing ASL, PSE, SEE, or Total Communication as required by student IEPs) to ensure full access to classroom instruction, teacher directions, academic concepts, and educational materials throughout the school day.
• Facilitates two-way communication between the student, peers, teachers, and school staff by interpreting sign language into spoken English ("voicing") and spoken English into sign language.
• Interprets for non-classroom educational settings and events, including assemblies, field trips, physical education, and extracurricular school activities as assigned.
• Utilizes preparation time to review lesson plans, specialized vocabulary, and instructional materials in advance to ensure accurate content delivery.
• Participates as a member of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Evaluation Team Report (ETR) teams, providing input regarding functional communication access and accommodations.
• Educates classroom teachers, staff, and peers on best practices for working with an interpreter and maintaining visual accessibility in the classroom.
• Adheres to professional ethical standards while balancing classroom management and instructional paraprofessional duties.
• Checks with the teacher for instructions; works with small groups and/or individual students. Seeks advice when expectations are unclear.
• Helps students with remedial and/or enrichment activities.
• Reinforces the teacher's instructional objectives and maintains a positive learning environment.
• Offers help when students ask or their behavior suggests assistance is needed, while avoiding being intrusive. Solves student concerns discreetly.
• Supports an inclusive educational environment, helping students with disabilities participate in peer group activities and facilitating peer-to-peer social interactions through sign language interpretation.
• Assists with student mobility needs and helps students use assistive and/or augmentative devices.
• Positions students to take full advantage of each learning environment (e.g., line of sight, proximity to equipment, height of work surfaces, and optimal visual line of sight for sign language interpretation).
• Follows prescribed medical plans and/or assists students with personal hygiene care (e.g., toileting, catheterization, feeding) as trained by a licensed healthcare professional.
• Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines and procedures.
• Promotes a favorable image of the service center and supports community/school partnerships.
• Remains free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances in the workplace throughout employment.
