Role Overview

The Trauma Nurse Coordinator supports the Trauma Service by working collaboratively across departments to ensure high‑quality, evidence‑based trauma care. This role contributes to patient care, performance improvement, education, and program development while fostering a positive and engaging healthcare environment for patients, families, and colleagues.


Purpose

The Trauma Nurse Coordinator is a Registered Nurse with advanced expertise in trauma nursing care and serves as an integral member of the healthcare organization. The role collaborates closely with the Trauma Medical Director and the Trauma Program Administrator to coordinate all aspects of the Trauma Program.

Responsibilities include serving as a role model for trauma care through educational and clinical activities, providing follow‑up for referring physicians and agencies, and supporting all trauma program standards in accordance with the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF). The Trauma Nurse Coordinator demonstrates a strong commitment to the community, quality patient care, and the nursing profession.


Key Responsibilities

Collaboration, Leadership, and Professional Practice

  • Develops and maintains productive internal and external working relationships through accountability, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues
  • Demonstrates respect for cultural differences and promotes healthy professional relationships
  • Models safe work practices, effective time management, and work‑life balance
  • Identifies and communicates safety concerns within the workplace
  • Participates in the development of trauma‑related nursing policies and procedures
  • Orients new staff as requested
  • Serves on hospital, regional, state, and national trauma‑related committees when assigned

Trauma Program Coordination and Quality Improvement

  • Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Administrator to support program quality and consistency
  • Develops and maintains trauma program quality indicators
  • Facilitates multidisciplinary performance improvement activities focused on patient outcomes
  • Aggregates, analyzes, and trends trauma data to support system improvement
  • Integrates trauma quality initiatives with the hospital’s overall quality program
  • Reviews PTSF quarterly reports and identifies key trends
  • Maintains credentialing data for trauma practitioners
  • Ensures compliance with hospital and PTSF quality assurance standards

Data Management and Regulatory Compliance

  • Manages trauma performance improvement documentation, including patient performance files and morbidity and mortality reviews
  • Oversees data flow for concurrent quality issues and directs them to appropriate personnel
  • Manages the Pennsylvania Outcomes and Performance Improvement Measurement System (POPIMS)
  • Performs concurrent medical record review and trauma data collection
  • Assists with preparation for PTSF surveys and the application process
  • Monitors compliance with PTSF standards related to trauma care

Education, Development, and Scholarly Activity

  • Acts as a role model for trauma education and clinical excellence
  • Encourages staff development in collaboration with leadership
  • Maintains accountability for ongoing professional development
  • Participates in scholarly activities, including publications, abstracts, and poster presentations

Patient and Family Experience

  • Creates a caring, compassionate, and patient‑centered experience
  • Builds and maintains supportive relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members
