What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at UPMC?
A Phlebotomist has the responsibility and accountability for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected by the phlebotomist are used for laboratory test procedures that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical functions that are essential to laboratory operations. The Phlebotomist works in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.
Title and Rate of Pay will be based on Education and Experience.
Responsibilities:
- Provide courteous, professional service to lab customers and respond promptly to phone inquiries.
- Collect blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, or fingerstick, following proper patient ID protocols; instruct patients on self-collection when needed and may collect non-blood samples.
- Demonstrate reliability, sound judgment, and adaptability to departmental priorities and authority.
- Perform specimen collection at on- and off-site locations; transport samples safely per protocol.
- Follow all lab and hospital policies, including procedures, safety, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions.
- Complete clerical tasks and use lab systems to enter patient data, process test orders, and ensure sample accuracy.
- Train and orient new staff, students, and residents as assigned.
- Report unusual incidents to technical staff, supervisors, or pathologists.
