Patient Care Technician, Float Pool

UPMC Hamot is looking for a Casual Patient Care Technician to join the Float Pool!

This position is Casual with rotating shifts, holidays and weekends required.

4, 8, or 12 hour shifts available!

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Purpose: The Patient Care Technician supports nurses and physicians by providing routine patient care and performing essential clinical tasks. Responsibilities include assisting with daily activities like bathing and feeding, monitoring vital signs and blood glucose, collecting specimens, and helping prevent hospital-acquired conditions. The role also involves advanced skills such as phlebotomy, EKGs, and catheter or IV removal, depending on departmental needs. All required competencies must be achieved and maintained to ensure high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities:

• Provides patient care, assists with procedures and daily activities. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
• Provides feedback to RN, reports changes in patient status.
• Performs core nursing assistant tasks: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care.
• Performs at least four additional tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal.
• Reports equipment malfunctions, communicates with other departments. Establishes professional, respectful relationships.
• Contributes to unit activities: responding to call lights, phones, passing meal trays, transporting patients.
• Receives feedback, identifies learning needs, improves knowledge and skills. Provides patient and family instruction under RN direction, manages patient restraints.
• Communicates effectively with healthcare team, understands cultural diversity and workplace safety.
• Adheres to policies and procedures, complies with safety standards. Supports department changes, projects, and quality initiatives.
• Documents in medical records, performs clerical functions.
• Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping/removal.
• Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
