What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at UPMC?
Medical Assistants assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction. Additionally, they serve as the lead person for team regarding day-to-day workflow issues or office procedures.
Title and Rate of pay will be based on Education and Experience
Responsibilities:
- Send/receive medical records per HIPAA and regulations.
- Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referrals; complete forms/requisitions.
- Schedule appointments; verify insurance and patient demographics.
- Prepare/manage charts; handle other front office tasks.
- Prepare patient rooms; set up instruments/equipment per protocol.
- Clean rooms, instruments, and equipment between visits; maintain infection control and records.
- Follow maintenance schedule; manage inventory and restock rooms.
- Check schedules; organize patient flow.
- Accompany patients to rooms; assist with transfers, dressing, specimen collection, and exam prep.
- Collect history, vitals, and perform screenings; relay provider instructions.
- Answer calls; provide information and patient education as directed.
- Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and basic labs.
- Assist physicians with procedures; document patient information.
- Comply with OSHA, CLIA, PA Dept. of Health, and UPMC policies.
- Maintain confidentiality of medical records.
- Administer injectable medications and vaccines under physician supervision.
- Perform system-wide competencies and other duties as assigned.
