Unit Description:
The Medical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is a 20-bed critical care facility, the largest of Shadyside’s ICUs. We primarily care for critically ill oncology medical, cardiac, and post-stem cell transplant patients, however, due to our size, we frequently receive overflow from many other areas of the hospital. You can expect to see procedures such as tracheostomies and bronchoscopies right at the bedside, as well as the use of ventilators, vasopressors, and CRRT machines. We are very team-oriented here, which is important as the MICU can feel hectic at times; the MICU is an extremely rewarding environment for nurses who enjoy thinking on their feet to meet challenges and solve problems.
Responsibilities:
Build Relationships: Create positive connections with patients and colleagues, respect cultural differences, and promote a safe, balanced work environment.
Teach Effectively: Educate patients, families, and staff using adult learning principles; support team learning and guide patients through care transitions.
Provide Holistic Care: Deliver individualized care using the nursing process, set daily goals, communicate clearly, and document thoroughly.
Grow Professionally: Participate in shared governance and quality initiatives, adapt to change, and use evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
