UPMC is hiring an Access Lead to support the UPMC Vision Institute located at 1622 Locust Street, 3rd Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. In this role, the Access Lead provides on-site leadership and operational support, helping to ensure a positive patient experience and smooth daily operations. The position is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Occasional travel (approximately 5%) to other sites may be required based on staffing and operational needs.

Provide ongoing education and communication as necessary.Provide feedback on a regular basis to management about all personnel, department issues and concerns for areas of direct responsibility.Monitor patient flow and respond to changes in workload, patient volume, and staffing levels, planning services accordingly.Ensure precertification requirements have been met prior to treatment.Update patient demographic and insurance information in the system as necessary. Verify insurance benefit information with all available carriers via electronic verification system or telephone if not previously completed.Interact with the clinical staff and/or ancillary departments to resolve reimbursement issues.Advise the clinical staff of the need for a possible referral to a participating health care facility when appropriate.Works various revenue reports within established time frames. Takes action accordingly to ensure a successful billing process.*Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.*Performs other duties as assigned.
- Refractive & Dry Eye scheduling expertise: schedule/confirm quick evaluations and dry eye evaluations; correct refractive scheduling errors; manage waitlists and proactively backfill openings to optimize clinic utilization.
- Self-pay service line support (Refractive & Dry Eye): this department operates primarily as a self-pay service; explain and collect out-of-pocket payments for refractive, dry eye procedures, and ICL, post payments accurately, and route insurance-based exceptions appropriately when medically ICL case financial coordination: obtain ASC account numbers; apply facility and anesthesia payments; distribute invoices/receipts; provide price quote sheets and ensure all components are paid per timeline prior to surgery.
- Dry eye questionnaire administration: notify patients of required dry eye questionnaires and follow up on incomplete submissions so results are available for the visit.
- Procedure-day refractive support: coordinate medical laser paperwork; distribute consent forms at check-in for procedure patients to review before treatment.
- Specialty documentation/scanning: scan refractive/dry eye required forms (HIPAA/TPO/redouts/consents and other program-specific documentation) and process vision-related forms (e.g., driver’s license forms at 1-month post-op) per workflow. necessary.
