Primary Purpose:

The Senior Director of Total Rewards (STDR) provides visionary leadership for the district’s rewards strategy, with a strong focus on retaining exceptional educators, school leaders, and support staff. The Senior Director of Total Rewards will set the strategy and manage the execution of the network’s Compensation, Benefits, Performance Pay, Headcount Planning & Analysis, and HRIS functions. The SDTR will provide strong and effective leadership, direction, and professional expertise in all areas of total rewards, for all network employees, across all employee types.

The Senior Director of Total Rewards will report directly to the Deputy Chief of People and will be responsible for demonstrating thought leadership on the development of total rewards methodologies and approaches, leading the implementation of new projects and initiatives and directing the service delivery of the Total Rewards Team. The SDTR will function as a business partner with an operational mindset. S/he will be a visionary leader with proven ability to create and implement HR strategies while simultaneously executing HR activities and programs in a fast-paced environment. S/he will design creative yet practical solutions to drive outcomes aligned with organizational objectives. The SDTR will leverage their expertise to become a trusted advisor to other senior leaders in the organization, establishing credibility across a wide range of interactions to develop and sustain healthy relationships that promote individual, team and organizational success.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Experience leading or managing major change initiatives.
  • Translate strategy into operational execution to drive momentum and alignment.
  • Serve as a critical partner on the design and implementation of any human capital and business management systems. Support the development and implementation of an HRIS system upgrade to ensure Uplift has accurate employee information, is meeting all necessary compliance requirements, and can support personnel efficiently.
  • Experience in compensation and benefits design, including negotiation and interpretation of pertinent regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of designing and administering merit-based programs.
  • Act as a trusted advisor, partner, and sounding board to Uplift leaders across the network.
  • Drive the design, development, implementation, and communication of total reward offerings, programs, and practices to help the company attract and retain great talent.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and a track record of success in bringing highly complex, cross-functional projects to completion.
  • Practical, business-oriented approach to problem solving and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, balanced by an appreciation for complexity and risk.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in working through complex transactions, with the ability to analyze, problem-solve, and communicate observations and recommendations.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships, working collaboratively across departments to ensure full adoption of processes, procedures, and policies.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Develop and implement procedures in the preparation and revision of job descriptions and for the classification of positions in Uplift’s compensation plan.
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental regulations related to compensation and benefits programs.
  • Lead the analysis of salary and wage adjustments in the budgeting process.
  • Administer and oversee all benefits programs for employees, including the selection and implementation of health and welfare programs.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, COBRA, Leaves of Absence (LOA), and emerging regulatory issues preferred.
  • Provide leadership to and direct supervision of the total rewards team members through effective coaching and performance management.
  • Resolves disputes and communicates with clients in cases that cannot be routinely handled by members of the total rewards team.
  • Oversee the review, communication, and implementation of the annual benefit programs' open enrollment.


Performance Pay

  • Leads the successful implementation of the Uplift Performance Pay Initiative (UPPI) and ensures that UPPI goals are met for eligible staff.
  • Leads the continuous improvement process for UPPI and all other performance management instruments.
  • Monitors and analyzes performance pay data to drive the work, including identifying trends, addressing issues, and adjusting implementation efforts as needed.
  • Outlines overarching goals for the team in collaboration with managers and devises a strategy to support managers.
  • Oversees ongoing training efforts of the team and facilitates additional training opportunities with other departments and stakeholders as needed.
  • Collaborates closely with key staff to ensure seamless program execution.
  • Engages and collaborates with department leads to support implementation network-wide.
  • Aligns efforts of the Total Rewards team to the Uplift’s goals of increasing student achievement by improving teacher effectiveness on every campus.


Qualifications: Education, Experience, and/or Certification(s)

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Human Resources, Organizational Leadership, or related field required, Master’s degree (preferred).
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in Compensation & Benefits.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Experience leading, supervising, and directing other professionals in addition to managing large-scale programs successfully.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and experience using Human Resources Information Systems.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The environment requires close proximity to other employees, frequent interruptions, and extended periods of time viewing a computer screen, and noise levels from moderate to high. There may be activity from other employees and students of a distracting nature. The role will require occasional travel to school sites and other locations; a current driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Starting Salary: $130,000
