Core Function

The CNC Machinist will program, set up, and operate CNC milling and turning centers to produce precision components used in tooling and production for UPG’s plastic injection operations. This position requires a self-motivated individual capable of taking projects from blueprint to finished part with minimal supervision.  

Responsibilities

  • Develop CNC programs using CAM software (Mastercam preferred) for 3-axis vertical/horizontal milling centers and turning centers
  • Interpret blueprints, CAD models, GD&T, and work instructions to determine optimal tool paths, speeds, feeds, and fixturing
  • Select, preset, and load cutting tools; perform tool life management and offset adjustments
  • Set up machines, including work-holding, tool holders, probing, and establishing work offsets
  • Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, CMM, bore gages)
  • Edit G-code at the control (Fanuc, Haas, or Siemens) to optimize cycle time and surface finish
  • Conduct first-article inspections and obtain quality approval before full production runs
  • Troubleshoot machining issues such as chatter, poor finish, dimensional drift, or tool breakage
  • Maintain accurate setup sheets, tool lists, and program revision logs
  • Follow safety rules, report safety problems and all injuries, regardless of severity; ensure plant safety and 5S housekeeping standards are maintained.
  • Participate in continuous improvement events to reduce cycle time and waste
  • Document and report non-conformances; support root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Maintain program backups and version control in shared network drives
  • Coordinate with engineering on ECNs (Engineering Change Notices) and prototype runs

 

 

Education Requirements 

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma; and 2-Year Technical Degree in CNC Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or related field. Experience can be substituted for education.

 

 

Training Requirements

Formal training in Mastercam (or equivalent CAM software) and G-code programming from an accredited technical college or apprenticeship program is preferred. NIMS or Mastercam certification is a plus.

 

 

Experience Requirements

Minimum 4 years of combined CNC programming and machine operation experience on 3-axis mills and/or lathes in a production environment. Must be able to program from scratch and run production independently. Experience in a high-mix, low-to-medium volume shop preferred.

 

 

Skills Requirements 

• Proficient in Mastercam (or Fusion 360/Siemens NX) for 3-axis toolpath generation  

• Strong G-code and M-code knowledge with hands-on editing capability  

• Blueprint reading with GD&T proficiency     

• Setup and operation of 3-axis CNC mills (Haas, DMG Mori, Doosan preferred)  

• Precision measurement and inspection techniques  

• Fixture design and work-holding solutions  

• Basic preventive maintenance on CNC machines (spindle, way covers, coolant systems)  

• Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems for job tracking  

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) for documentation

Physical Requirements

  Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

 

Visual Acuity 

 The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as; preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and or operation or machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distance close to the eyes.

 

 

Work Conditions

  The worker may be exposed to typical manufacturing conditions, including noise, dust, and mechanical hazards, and must follow all safety protocols and wear required PPE.
