What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr. WordPress Developer position at Upcraft?
About Upcraft
We’re a small web development agency specializing in custom WordPress sites and managed service packages. We build modern, performant websites with clean design and handle ongoing maintenance, updates, security, and feature development for our clients. We work with enterprise clients and mid sized businesses who value quality.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced WordPress developer who can take ownership of technical decisions, advise on architecture, and deliver clean code without much oversight. This is a 15 to 20 hr/week position (potential to grow) where you’ll be a technical partner, not just someone executing tasks. You’ll work directly with our team to build custom WordPress sites, implement new features for existing clients, and make smart decisions about plugins, infrastructure, and best practices.
What You'll Do
- Build custom WordPress sites from scratch using modern development practices
- Architect solutions for client feature requests and advise on the best approach
- Evaluate and recommend plugins, themes, and infrastructure for projects
- Write clean, maintainable PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Optimize sites for performance, security, and scalability
- Troubleshoot and debug issues on existing client sites
- Collaborate with our team on technical strategy and project planning
- Occasionally jump into client communication to explain technical recommendations
Job Requirements
- 6 to 8 years of hands on WordPress development experience
- Deep knowledge of WordPress core, themes, plugins, and the ecosystem
- Strong PHP skills and understanding of WordPress coding standards
- Strong JavaScript skills
- Experience with modern WordPress (Gutenberg, block development, REST API)
- Comfortable with ACF, Gravity Forms, WooCommerce, and other common plugins
- Knowledge of performance optimization, caching, and security best practices
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and local development environments
- Experience with managed WordPress hosting platforms (WP Engine, Pantheon, or similar)
- Ability to make architectural decisions and explain tradeoffs clearly
- Self directed and able to work independently
Bonus Points
- Experience with marketing automation platforms (Marketo, HubSpot, Pardot)
- Front-end framework experience (React, Vue)
- Design sensibility and attention to detail
Logistics
- Part-time: 15-20 hours per week
- Remote (must overlap with PST business hours for collaboration)
- Rate: $40-60/hr depending on experience
- Flexible schedule, but we need consistent availability for client projects
