About The Kirby Institute

The Kirby Institute is a world-leading health research institute at UNSW Sydney. We work to eliminate infectious diseases, globally. Our specialisation is in developing health solutions for the most at-risk communities. Putting communities at the heart of our research, we develop tests, treatments, cures and prevention strategies that have the greatest chance of success.

Position Summary

The Senior Research Fellow (Level C or D) will play a key role within the Kirby Institute's Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, leading high-quality research to improve the detection, prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis and drug user health. Reporting to the Deputy Program Head, the role leads the design and delivery of epidemiological studies, clinical effectiveness studies and clinical trials, while contributing to research excellence, competitive grant funding, and the translation of evidence into policy and practice.

At Level C, the role is expected to make independent and original contributions to research, establish a nationally recognised research profile, lead research projects, publish high-quality outputs, contribute to competitive grant applications, build collaborative partnerships, and provide methodological leadership across research activities. The role also supports the supervision and mentoring of research staff and higher degree research students.

At Level D, the role builds on the Level C responsibilities by providing strategic research leadership across the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program and the broader Kirby Institute. This includes demonstrating an internationally recognised research profile, leading major national and international funding applications and multidisciplinary collaborations, and driving the translation of research into policy, clinical practice and public health implementation.

Some Key Skills Required

At Level C:

  • A PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, infectious diseases, drug user health, or a closely related discipline, and equivalent research experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, conduct and analysis of epidemiological studies and/or clinical trials in infectious diseases, viral hepatitis, public health or drug user health.
  • Strong track record of high-quality research outputs, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and evidence of growing national research recognition.
  • Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis and management of complex clinical, epidemiological and/or linked administrative health datasets using software packages such as R, Stata, SAS or Python.
  • Demonstrated success, relative to opportunity, in obtaining competitive research funding and/or contributing to successful grant applications.
  • Demonstrated capacity to independently lead research projects and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams and external stakeholder networks.
  • Experience working with health services, government agencies, community organisations and/or priority populations relevant to viral hepatitis and drug user health.
  • Experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services, correctional health and/or community-led research approaches will be viewed favorably.

At Level D (in Addition To The Above)

  • Evidence of an established international research profile and reputation in infectious diseases, viral hepatitis and/or drug user health.
  • Sustained success in securing nationally and internationally competitive research funding as lead investigator.
  • Demonstrated leadership of major multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research collaborations and programs.
  • Evidence of substantial research leadership, including mentoring and development of research staff and higher degree research students.
  • Demonstrated capacity to influence policy, clinical practice and/or public health strategy through research translation.
