The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 170 academic, research and professional staff. In 2025, the school obtained $22M in research funding, produced over 800 scientific publications and is frequently rated among the top schools across UNSW in student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science and Oceanography.

The School hosts the Centre for Marine Science and Innovation, the new ARC Centre of Excellence for Our Future Oceans, the Centre for Ecosystem Science, the Climate Change Research Centre, the Evolution and Ecology Research Centre and the Earth and Sustainability Science Research Centre. Academic staff are members of the UNSW Institute of Climate Risk & Response, Sydney Institute of Marine Sciences and the UNSW Global Water Institute. We contribute extensively to national ocean modelling initiatives and lead facilities of the NCRIS funded Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) including NSW’s scientific moorings and the Fishing Vessels as Ships of Opportunity Program.

Role

The School is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Level B academic) in the Marine Sciences. The purpose of this role is to conduct high quality research, teaching and research student supervision in the field of fisheries research and/or biological oceanography with strong links to state, national or international policy and current environmental management. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to engage with the newly funded ARC Centre of Excellence for Our Future Oceans. The School is interested in an appointment of a Marine Scientist with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Fisheries science including wild fisheries & aquaculture
  • Biological oceanography & pelagic ecosystems, including ichthyoplankton and zooplankton
  • Interactions across biological and physical marine systems
  • Marine biogeochemistry & nutrient cycling
  • Current environmental threats and solutions for improved marine management
  • Quantitative sciences needed for decision making and management
  • Translating marine science to state, national and/or international policy
  • Public communication of scientific research to increase potential impact


About The Role

  • Level B ($127k - $150k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Continuing
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)


Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include

  • Conduct of high-quality research in fisheries and/or biological oceanography independently and as part of research teams.
  • Publication of scientific papers and reports in highly ranked journals and provision of reports to funding bodies.
  • To maintain and grow research through success in application for external research funds, including the national competitive grant schemes and/or contract research.
  • Supervision of research students enrolled in Honours, Masters and PhD degrees.
  • Teaching and coordination of units within undergraduate degree programs, including use of digital educational platforms.
  • Contribute to curriculum and course development in teaching programs within the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Contribution to the objectives of relevant research centres and groups within the university.
  • Engage in public communication of research results and their implications
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., UNSW Centres, Commonwealth and State Government agencies, collaborating Universities, commercial and recreational fishing industry partners).
  • Participation in major conferences and/or workshops relevant to the disciplinary area.
  • Contribution to the administration and leadership roles appropriate to the level of appointment within the School as required.

About The Successful Applicant

(Selection Criteria)

To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have

  • A PhD in fisheries and/or biological oceanography or related sciences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research.
  • A strong track record of publications in top-tier journals and conference presentations (relative to opportunity).
  • Capacity to secure research funding from competitive grant schemes and other sources and/or obtain research contracts (relative to opportunity), including fellowships.
  • Capacity to work within, and commence building, a research team and attract higher degree research students
  • Capacity to establish collaborations with external agencies and non-government organisations to deliver science that can impact marine science policy, management or practice.
  • Capacity to deliver high quality and engaging teaching in undergraduate courses, at introductory and advanced levels, including digital delivery of course content.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders, the public and students.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and presentation skills.
  • A commitment to the collaborative and inclusive culture of the School.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
