What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sustainability Manager position at UNS?

UNS in Amsterdam is seeking a dynamic and experienced Sustainability Manager to lead and manage sustainability-focused initiatives within our Research & Innovation (R&I) department and Center of Expertise. This pivotal role will focus on aligning sustainability strategy with the broader R&I vision, ensuring that cutting-edge sustainability practices and tools are seamlessly integrated into the organization’s core operations.

The Role

The Sustainability Manager will play a key role in co-developing and translating strategic plans into actionable deliverables, critically evaluating and refining existing strategies, and driving impact. You will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of sustainable design at UNS, ensuring our projects not only meet but define future standards and that the organization remains at the forefront of sustainable design.

 

Key Responsibilities 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing and driving the implementation of the sustainability strategy, ensuring alignment between sustainability and the R&I department.

  • Translate high-level strategic plans into clear, actionable operational deliverables.

  • Critically evaluate existing strategic plans, identifying areas for improvement and implementing necessary refinements.

  • Monitor Sustainability CoE performance based on strategic KPIs, reporting findings to senior leadership, including CoE leads.

  • Manage the entire sustainability innovation portfolio, ensuring it aligns with organizational and departmental goals.

  • Advocate for sustainability across diverse audiences, effectively communicating its value to team members, clients, and stakeholders who may not yet recognize its benefits.

  • Collaborate across domains to integrate sustainability into workflows, engaging with UNS’ global network of over 450 professionals.

  • Establish global standards and best practices for sustainability, ensuring consistency and excellence across all UNS entities. Develop and implement internal standards, processes, and training materials to ensure consistent application of sustainability practices across all teams and entities

  • Empower internal teams, including architects and designers, by providing strategic guidance and embedding sustainability into their projects.

  • Bring the sustainability message to all UNS studios, departments and global offices through workshops, tailored advice, and project-specific guidance.

  • Streamline sustainability strategies, deliverables, and implementation plans, tracking progress and incorporating feedback to ensure continuous improvement and measurable impact.

 

Collaboration/Network:

  • Build and maintain a network of internal global contacts (studios, international offices) to ensure sustainability initiatives are well understood, supported, and effectively implemented across all our global teams.

  • Collaborate with external partners, including research institutions and industry leaders, to co-develop innovative sustainability solutions and stay ahead of emerging trends.

  • Manage internal communication of strategic sustainability initiatives, providing updates on project progress and ensuring relevant departments stay informed.

 

Leadership/Coordination:

  • Drive and assist senior leadership in coordinating strategic sustainability initiatives by tracking deadlines, managing resources, and ensuring project progress aligns with all relevant strategic plans.

  • Oversee the operational management of sustainability projects, ensuring seamless coordination, resource allocation, and follow-through on key action items.

  • Lead and mentor a small, specialized team focused on developing knowledge and building new tools to empower our design studios.



Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in sustainability leadership, strategy, or program management, with a proven track record of translating strategic plans into operational deliverables and critically measuring and evaluating their impact.

  • In-depth knowledge of international sustainability standards, certifications (e.g., BREEAM, LEED, WELL), and best practices.

  • Proven experience managing sustainability initiatives across all design phases, ideally in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage with stakeholders at all levels, from technical teams to senior leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate teams, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

  • Proficiency in sustainability software and tools (e.g., EnergyPlus, One-Click LCA, ClimateStudio).

  • A degree in Environmental Engineering, Architecture, or a related field (or equivalent combination of experience and education).

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).

  • A deep passion for sustainability and a drive to make a tangible impact.
