What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School English Teacher position at Unquowa School?
Unquowa School seeks a skilled and collaborative Middle School English Teacher to join our Upper School Humanities Team. This position is ideal for an educator with a strong background in teaching writing, literature, and language skills to middle school students, and who is committed to supporting a range of learners in an engaging, student-centered classroom. This role may also include the opportunity to advise our award-winning literary magazine, Pen and Paper.
Responsibilities
● Teach middle school humanities classes with a focus on writing, literature, grammar, and vocabulary
● Design and implement engaging lessons that develop students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills
● Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners and help all students grow
● Provide timely, thoughtful feedback on student work
● Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports student engagement and belonging
● Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum, instruction, and cross-disciplinary opportunities
● Communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues
● Participate fully in the life of the school, including meetings, events, and professional development
● Lead or support student literary work, including capstone speech writing, and the possibility of advising our award-winning literary magazine, Pen and Paper.
Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field; advanced degree preferred
● Experience teaching English and/or Humanities at the middle school level
● Strong understanding of writing instruction, literary analysis, and adolescent literacy development
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse learners
● Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
● Experience serving as a middle school advisor is a plus
● Experience advising student publications or literary magazines is a plus
