Position Summary
The UNM Department of Dermatology seeks qualified applicants for a Clinical Research Scholar
position. We serve a large, medically complex population and act as a consultative resource for
the state of New Mexico and the Four Corners region of the Southwest. This position is
particularly well suited for physicians interested in pursuing dermatology residency or other
competitive specialties who have completed or will complete at least two years of ACGMEaccredited
postgraduate training and will become eligible for an unrestricted New Mexico
medical license during the appointment.
The Clinical Research Scholar will engage in mentored clinical, translational, and/or basic
science research within the Department of Dermatology. This role is designed for physicians
pursuing careers in academic medicine and physician-scientist pathways. The scholar will be
actively involved in managing clinical trials and serving as a sub-investigator on industry- and
investigator-initiated studies while working closely with faculty investigators to develop research
skills, produce scholarly work, and contribute to ongoing projects. The position is intended to
provide strong preparation for residency training and future academic careers.
Key Responsibilities:
-Design, conduct, and manage research projects under faculty mentorship
-Serve as sub-investigator and actively participate in the management of clinical trials
- Perform data collection, management, and statistical analysis
- Prepare manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and oral presentations for publication and
conferences
- Assist with IRB submissions, regulatory documentation, and compliance requirements
- Conduct literature reviews and contribute to grant writing when applicable
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams, including clinicians, statisticians, and
coordinators
- Maintain accurate research records and databases
- Participate in departmental research meetings, journal clubs, and educational activities
- Opportunities for supervised clinical exposure consistent with licensing status
- Receive structured mentorship focused on career development, scholarship, and residency
preparation
