What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC) position at unm?
The University of New Mexico (UNM) seeks a dynamic, innovative,
results-oriented, and proven leader for the position of Director of the
Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC), one of UNM’s premier
strategic research centers. The selected candidate will report directly to the
Vice President for Research (VPR) and will be open rank determined by the individual’s academic background.
CARC is an internationally recognized center of
excellence in advanced computing systems with a long history of research,
innovation, and service in computing systems and computational science. The
center’s mission is to facilitate cross-disciplinary computational research at
UNM and nation-wide by leading multi-disciplinary research and educational
initiatives and by providing advanced computing services to the University
community. CARC supported research at UNM includes faculty, staff, and students
from many departments, colleges, research centers, and campuses, including the
School of Engineering, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Fine
Arts, the Quantum New Mexico Institute, and the UNM Health Sciences Center.
CARC also actively collaborates with faculty and staff across campus and at
Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories in educational initiatives to train
the next generation of computational experts through programs such as the
University’s Computational Science and Engineering graduate certificate
program.
To
facilitate and execute research and superb educational opportunities in advanced
research computing, CARC supports high performance and data intensive computing
facilities used by the entire UNM community[GT1] .
These resources, managed directly by CARC staff, include multiple compute
clusters that include state-of-the-art GPU resources, dedicated enterprise and
high-performance storage systems, high-speed networking systems, and a wide
range of software packages for use by the community of UNM researchers,
including traditional scientific computing applications, state-of-the-art data
analytics and machine learning systems. These systems are housed in CARC's
dedicated research data center with multiple UPS systems and cooling systems;
UNM is also in the process of upgrading these facilities to support additional
computing systems to support emerging research in AI and quantum computing. For
