The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC) is the state’s largest academic medical center, encompassing the School of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing, College of Population Health, UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the UNM Health System. The UNM Health System—which includes UNM Hospital and Sandoval Regional Medical Center—delivers high-quality care to more than 200,000 New Mexicans annually.

The Office of the HSC Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer (EVP/CEO) is seeking a Deputy Chief of Staff to join a dynamic, fast-paced executive team. Reporting to the UNM HSC Chief of Staff, this role ensures operational efficiency and effectiveness within the EVP/CEO Office, fostering a culture of service, professionalism, and continuous improvement. The Deputy Chief of Staff serves as a trusted advisor, representing executive leadership on delegated projects and initiatives aligned with the University priorities. Responsibilities may include managing office staff and coordinating government relations activities, requiring a strong understanding of federal and state policies impacting academic medical centers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Manages high-priority projects designed to achieve the University's HSC/HS mission and strategic vision; builds and maintains successful working relationships and coordinates with a wide range of offices, staff, and stakeholders, internal and external to the University.
  2. Gathers, investigates, researches, analyzes, and/or studies information affecting campus-wide, intradepartmental, or interdepartmental operations; participates in institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution as a member of senior staff.
  3. Anticipates, identifies and troubleshoots issues of concern or significance; exercises discretion to provide timely information and necessary updates across multiple stakeholders.
  4. Ensures matters requiring the attention of executive leaders are thoroughly developed, researched and evaluated; responds to routine inquiries and deputizes for the Chief of Staff, where appropriate and when necessary.
  5. Researches, writes, edits and/or coordinates preparation of special reports, briefings and presentations; conceives, crafts, and edits messages, letters and other communications on behalf of executive leadership and the Chief of Staff.
  6. Coordinates and/or oversees the scheduling of strategic events, meetings and other requests to balance and address key institutional objectives.
  7. Supports and sustains a culture of service, professionalism and continuous improvement in the Office of the Executive Vice President/CEO.
  8. Assists administration in various cost analyses, projections, reports, and fundraising efforts.
  9. Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal communication skills/professionalism
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and critical thinking skills; adaptability to meet changing demands.
  • Strong skills in Smartsheets or other program management software.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and address a wide variety of issues and problems in a high-intensity environment.
  • Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure and operations of a major public university.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
