Job Summary
Responsible for providing support to Veterinarians and Certified Veterinary Technicians. This support includes but Is not limited to providing patient care. maintaining accurate medical records, providing clerical assistance, supporting hospital staff, and providing a high level of customer service.Duties & Responsibilities

Provides standard paramedical support and nursing care: • Assist faculty, staff, or students in identifying , weighing, and conducting physical examinations • Communicate with clients including taking histories and providing client education and discharge instructions in emergent situations • Provide nursing care, such as monitoring patient's bodily functions and noting irregularities (temperature, respirations, heartbeat. amount and frequency of food consumption, defecation, and urination): assisting with insertion and maintenance of catheters and tubes; assisting with biopsies, care of critical and/or emergency patients , and other diagnostic testing • Operate physiological support and monitoring devises. Responsible for the maintenance of the equipment
- Prepare animals and surgical area for surgical procedures; administer pre-medication for anesthesia and help in surgery under the direct supervision of the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician
- Operate. clean, and perform maintenance of equipment or instruments(such as respirators, nebulizers. blood gas analyzers, suction units. E.C.G.. incubators, steam autoclaves, anesthesia machines, diagnostic radiographs equipment, and lab equipment). Clean, supply and maintain treatment and laboratory area
- Collect blood. fecal, and urine supplies; prepare sample to send out for laboratory analysts and for In-house laboratories
- Assist with preparing, administering and monitoring of a variety of analgesics, tranquilizers, drugs administered, and client communications. Enter charges into health information system
- Maintain and update records of patient examination, treatments, drugs administered, and client communications. Enter changes into the health
- Assisting in paramedical activities and to recognize and respond to physiological abnormalities such as shock, hypotenslon, renal failure, bloat, BDV, etc.
- Greet clients, admit and discharge patients and enter patient data: • Assist clients in-person and over-the-phone in a prompt, friendly, caring, and helpful manner. answer telephones and direct and/or answer client calls appropriately.
- Relay instructions or follow-up inquiries by the veterinarian as requested
- Maintain cleanliness of the reception area and exam rooms Perform other duties as requested

A normal office setting In a veterinary practice can be fast-paced at times and involves exposure to a variety of animals. The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury, including zoonotic diseases. Persons allergic to animal dander may experience discomfort in this position. This position entails restraining animals of various species for examination, The amount of physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the technician may be moving a 40 pound dog on and off an examination table. The effects of this position will directly affect clients, clinical staff, and students as assigned to cases.Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of professional business office protocol, clerical procedures, and medical office routines.
- Strong customer service orientation and ability to work well with others, even in stressful situations.
- Ability to quickly learn the MDVC practice management software and accurately maintain medical records.
- Working knowledge of medical and veterinary terminology.
- Knowledge of operating computers. telephones, email, internet, faxing systems.
- Intermediate arithmetic skills.
- Possess knowledge of companion animals and ability to work around animals.
- Ability to multitask as well as provide complete follow through.
- Position requires a great deal of tact. diplomacy, and patience.
- The employee will need to continuously develop new methods and skills dealing with clients and clinical staff successfully.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4079 - Veterinary Assistant position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/15/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
