Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor Position

1.   Position Summary

The Department of Energy & Petroleum Engineering (EPE) at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Scientific Machine Learning for Subsurface Energy Systems as part of the University’s AI Cluster Hire Initiative.

We seek a scholar who will develop an internationally recognized, externally funded research program at the intersection of:

  • Data analytics for upstream oil and gas systems
  • Scientific machine learning and physics-informed AI
  • High-performance computing for energy applications
  • AI-enabled decision-making under uncertainty
  • Digital twins of subsurface assets

The successful candidate will play a central role in strengthening UW’s leadership in digital transformation of subsurface energy systems.

Exceptional candidates may be considered at the Associate Professor rank.

2.   Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated research activity in AI/ML applied to scientific or engineering systems
  • Demonstrated background or strong research interest in energy-related applications, with clear potential to contribute to teaching and research in subsurface energy systems
  • Evidence of research productivity (peer-reviewed publications, software, datasets, or equivalent scholarly outputs)
  • Demonstrated potential (Assistant rank) or record (Associate rank) of securing external funding
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring

3.   Preferred Qualifications

·      Demonstrated success in interdisciplinary collaboration

·      Experience working with industry or national laboratories

·      Strong potential for sustained external funding in AI and energy-related programs (e.g., DOE, NSF, ARPA-E, industry)

·      A research record showing promise of excellence in petroleum engineering and relate fields.

·      Demonstrated experience (or strong potential) for securing competitive external research funding.

·      Strong communication skills.

·      Experience teaching, mentoring, or assisting with university-level instruction.
