Position Summary:

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in surveying and geomatics at the Assistant Professor level to start in August 2026. We are excited to find a new faculty member to join our group of dedicated educators to teach undergraduate engineering at our public institution. We seek candidates who will collaborate with us to continually improve our pedagogy and curriculum to develop more diverse citizen engineers who will create the sustainable and equitable infrastructure of the future.


This is a full time, benefit-eligible position with a 9-month academic appointment. Review of candidates will begin on November 3rd, 2026. Applications will be considered until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is Fall of 2026.

Key Job Responsibilities:

* Teach and develop a range of undergraduate courses that include surveying, GIS, and advanced coursework in remote or scanned data collection as well as design-focused senior level classes in civil engineering. Applicants must also have the ability to teach other civil engineering related courses (for example, Introduction to Infrastructure, Engineering Graphics, etc.).

* Provide academic advising to approximately 35 students.

* Participate in scholarly and professional development activities that will enhance teaching effectiveness. Examples of such activities include technical discipline-specific research, engineering education research, and professional consulting. Ideally, research activities will include direct undergraduate student involvement.

* Work with colleagues in the department and across campus to build a strong program focused on data collection methods for use in construction and engineering related fields.

* Participate in department, college, and university service.

* Participate in ABET accreditation and assessment efforts.

* Allocate 10 hours per week outside of class for student engagement with at least 5 hours reserved for meeting students in office hours.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • PhD in Civil Engineering, Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Science, Geophysics, or related field

  • Ability to teach and develop undergraduate courses in surveying and geomatics, as well as other civil engineering-related courses.

  • Progress towards becoming a licensed professional engineer or surveyor by having passed the FE or PLS exam or having a minimum of 6 months professional experience in a related field.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong commitment to undergraduate education and teaching excellence.

  • Willingness to work with students and faculty in an inclusive and collegial environment.

  • At least one semester experience as a Teaching Assistant or lead instructor.

Civil and Environmental Engineering at UW-Platteville:

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department currently has 480 students, with 410 of them majoring in civil engineering and 70 of them majoring in environmental engineering. The programs provide students with the knowledge and experience needed to pursue a productive lifelong career in industry or to engage in further study at the graduate level. The Department has 15 faculty and staff. Our students are actively engaged in high-impact practices including undergraduate research, internships, community service, and student organizations. The Department hosts eight student organizations, including the Platteville Society of Environmental Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and Engineers Without Borders. The Department is a collegial, collaborative, and supportive learning environment for students and staff. Surveying and GIS have been key parts of our curriculum for many decades.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (EMS). The College of EMS serves over 2,650 undergraduate students and 73 graduate students.
