Job Duties

Student success at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside is measured by each student’s academic progress, persistence, and degree completion. To support these outcomes, the University utilizes a coordinated care approach in which members of the Student Engagement & Development team collaborate closely with campus partners to deliver holistic, student-centered support. Through this model, staff share responsibility for ensuring that students receive timely, proactive, and integrated services both inside and outside the classroom. This collaborative, team-based approach ensures that students experience a seamless network of care designed to support their individual success.

The Academic and Career Advisor, Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO supports the success of first-generation students, students from limited-income backgrounds, and students with disabilities through a federally funded grant program designed to increase college retention, persistence, graduation, and

academic achievement.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Manages an assigned caseload of students by providing proactive outreach, ongoing support, and coordinated communication.
  • Utilizes Navigate to document student interactions, analyze alerts and progress reports, and monitor student enrollment and engagement trends.
  • Maintain accurate and timely advising records.
  • Engages in proactive outreach and interventions guided by data-informed insights and work direction provided by supervisor and/or campus leadership.
  • Provide individualized advising to help students understand educational options and academic requirements to build degree completion plans.
  • Guide students through self-assessments, interest inventories, and career research tools to identify strengths, interests, and set academic, personal and career goals.
  • Teach academic and career readiness skills through orientations, workshops, classroom presentations, and courses like freshman seminar or career exploration.
  • Connect students to key academic and personal resources such as tutoring, counseling, basic needs support, financial aid
  • Coach students on effective job and internship search strategies, including networking, resume and cover letter development, and interview preparation.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff, and campus services such as Parkside Works to ensure a coordinated and supportive student experience.
  • Stay current on academic policies, curriculum changes, labor market trends, and advising best practices; pursue ongoing professional development and certification to support student success and retention.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.
  • This position may occasionally require travel between school buildings, and attendance at evening or weekend events.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Proactively engages students as needed

$45,000-$48,000/year, depending on qualifications and experience

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • One or more years of para-professional or professional experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of best practices that promote student academic success and career exploration, with the ability to learn, understand, and explain related processes and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success supporting and engaging students who are first-generation, limited income, and/or students with disabilities
  • Experience overcoming barriers similar to those of TRIO participants
  • Knowledge of career assessments and career development theory
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and prior experience with, proactive student intervention
  • A master's degree from an accredited institution
