Job Duties:

This full-time, 12-month position is responsible for the development, coordination, and continuous improvement of tutoring services that support student academic success. This position oversees the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student tutors while ensuring tutoring services align with best practices in higher education learning support. The Learning Center Specialist collaborates with faculty, staff, and departmental leadership to assess student learning needs, enhance tutor effectiveness, and provide high-quality academic support services, including oversight of tutoring labs, embedded tutoring, and group tutoring initiatives. Additionally, the position contributes to departmental operations through strategic planning, program assessment, student employee development, and representation of the department at campus events and initiatives.

Examples of responsibilities and expectations within this role include but are not limited to:

60% Conduct hiring, training, and supervision of student tutors.

a. Recruit, hire, and train tutors; adhering to best practices in the field, including involvement of instructors in the selection process and incorporating learning theory and effective communication within training

b. Assess tutor and learner performance and prepare reports recommending instructional improvements

c. Develop and facilitate ongoing professional development and training for tutors

d. Coordinate content area collaborations among tutors in STEM courses to promote tutor retention and consistency with tutoring experiences for students

e. Identify high demand courses and coordinate group tutoring whenever necessary

f. Coordinate the Math Drop-in Tutoring Lab including selection, training, and scheduling of tutors

g. Assist with the embedded tutoring program, including training and supervision of tutors

h. Design, implement, and demonstrate discipline-specific learning strategies, tutoring resources, and evidence-based session facilitation techniques for peer tutors

i. Coordinate scheduling and delivery of in-class tutoring promotion and recruitment

j. Supervise tutoring under the direction of the Director

30% Conduct ongoing evaluations of student tutors and tutoring program

a. Create, disseminate, and collect evaluations on tutor training as well as tutor performance each semester

b. Analyze impact of training and tutor performance in collaboration with the Director and staff; make necessary changes to program to enhance quality and effectiveness

c. Conduct formal and informal tutor observations and provide written and verbal feedback

d. Coordinate and conduct tutor check-in meetings to improve employee retention

e. Proctor in-class exams and make-up assessments

10% Assist in maintaining overall operations of department

a. Support program objectives in coordination with all staff members

b. Participate in strategic planning to enhance departmental service provision and student experience

c. Develop and provide a consistent student employment experience

d. Represent the department at various events on campus throughout the year

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Meets with students for intake and general assessment and makes referrals to others on campus as appropriate
  • May participate in strategic planning and grant proposals for instructional development, new teaching methods, and program direction
  • May supervise the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support
  • Works to develop and/or design curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction within that discipline
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Assesses learner performance and may prepare reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of said instructional techniques
  • Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory courses in a variety of formats such as one-on-one sessions, group sessions, peer mentor sessions, and seminars

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree

  • Professional experience as a teacher, trainer, tutor, group tutor, SI Leader, and/or with other learning assistance programs

  • Proven experience with supervision of students

  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing complex schedules

  • Working knowledge of basic principles of learning assistance and evaluation

  • Proven ability to work independently

  • Proficiency in electronic communication, standard office software, and spreadsheets in the context of running a learning assistance program

  • Demonstrated c ommitment to maintaining a campus environment that values varied perspectives and experiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree

  • An understanding of teaching and learning best practices, acquired through an appropriate academic degree or related work experience

  • Experience working with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences

  • Demonstrated experience supervising college students
