The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saukville Field Station (SFS) is seeking a Groundskeeper to assist with the maintenance and upkeep of SFS buildings and grounds.
This University Staff Temporary (Limited Term Employment (LTE)) position provides hands-on experience in facilities and grounds maintenance during the summer months. This is a part-time position for a max of 20 hours/week, with flexibility to work less.
There is no expectation of continued employment with this appointment. The need for this position is temporary and carries no assurance of continued funding. Temporary employees are "at will," meaning the institution may terminate the appointment without notice and for any or no reason, provided it is not based on prohibited discrimination.
About The Property
The Saukville Field Station (SFS) is an off-campus facility located in Saukville, WI, about 30 miles (45 minutes) north of campus. UWM owns ~ 350 acres at the main Station property, which is adjacent to the Cedarburg Bog State Natural Area (SNA). SFS has a classroom/office building, research lab building, maintenance building and shop, and two houses. Additionally, SFS supports research, education and public outreach in the natural sciences. Our property is used as an outdoor classroom and laboratory for faculty from various disciplines, including plant and animal ecology, evolutionary ecology, ethology, geology, hydrology and climatology. Faculty from UWM and other institutions conduct research on our properties. SFS offers a series of natural history workshops each year, which are open to UWM students and the general public. UWM instructional courses also use the Field Station. SFS is supported by the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog, a non-profit group that was formed to support SFS and the Cedarburg Bog SNA. In collaboration with the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog, SFS offers numerous public outreach events each year. - Cleaning and maintaining SFS buildings and facilities
- Assisting the Superintendent with remodeling projects
- Supporting general grounds and facility upkeep as needed
- Maintaining walking trails and the boardwalk and keeping them free of vegetation and hazards.
- Cutting grass and trimming using mowing equipment and weed trimmers

Required Qualifications
- Experience with using and maintaining landscaping equipment (tractors, mowers, tillers, etc.).
- Experience mowing grass and operating a weed trimmer
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work, outdoors under a variety of conditions (for example, in heat or cold, in the presence of biting insects, in wet and mucky conditions).
- Willingness to perform janitorial duties, including cleaning.
- Ability to interact and work with a wide variety of people (co-workers, researchers, students, volunteers, and neighbors).
- Dependable and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to occasionally lift at least 50 pounds.

- Experience operating a chainsaw
- Background in a skilled trade or maintenance field
- Strong interest in learning new skills related to facilities and grounds maintenance
