Public Health Educator

Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is seeking a dynamic Public Health Educator to lead outreach and engagement for the Wisconsin Clinical Laboratory Network (WCLN)—a nationally recognized partnership bridging clinical and public health laboratories across the state. This role is ideal for someone passionate about infectious disease diagnostics, laboratory science, and public health. The Educator will serve as a key liaison, strengthening relationships through site visits, webinars, and conference presentations, while developing educational content that supports emergency preparedness, disease surveillance, and outbreak response. As part of the Communicable Disease Division, the Educator will also coordinate expert advisory groups, manage communications like newsletters, and contribute to a collaborative, mission-driven team working to protect the health of Wisconsin residents.

This position is on-site at 2601 Agriculture Dr, Madison, WI 53718. Work hours are 7:45 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Rare after hours, weekend or holiday work may be required in support of urgent or emergent public health needs of the organization. Hybrid remote work may be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager after successfully passing a period of probation.

About the Communicable Disease Division – Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene

The WSLH and CDD serve as the State of Wisconsin's laboratory for infectious disease testing, supporting the Wisconsin Division of Health Services through surveillance and outbreak response for any pathogen of public health significance. The CDD is a national and regional reference laboratory for many Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs, including but not limited to the detection of and surveillance for influenza, vaccine-preventable diseases, enteric disease pathogens, parasitic diseases, and antimicrobial resistance.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Collects and analyzes data by conducting research to improve public health programs and services - 30%
  • Participates in public health committees as needed - 5%
  • Advocates for and disseminates health resources, policies, and safety information with educational materials and programs to appropriate entities to educate the public and health professionals - 30%
  • Develops materials, resources, and policies that support healthy behaviors and environments and informs, educates, and empowers the campus and community about environmental health and mental health issues - 35%

Compensation:

$60,000/year minimum (Salary is negotiable depending on qualifications)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in bacteriology, microbiology, MLS (Medical Laboratory Science), or similar allied health science
  • Clinical or public health laboratory experience
  • Strong ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong ability to engage with professionals at all levels of experience, build and strengthen relationships, and network

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MLS(ASCP), MLT (ASCP), or M(ASCP) certification
  • Conference or event program management experience
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong basic computer skills including Microsoft Access, Excel, Power Point Outlook, and Word
  • Experience with a variety of platforms, including but not limited to: virtual meeting/learning apps like Teams, Zoom, etc.; podcasting; polling/survey technology; customer and event database management; social media

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in bacteriology, microbiology, MLS (Medical Laboratory Science), or similar allied health science
